Legislation known as the "Protect College Sports Act" is currently advancing through the United States Congress, with its proponents hoping it will reach the president's desk for signature. Former President Donald Trump has made his strong support for the proposed bill unequivocally clear.
Trump's Public Endorsement
In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, the former president expressed his fervent backing for the legislation.
He described "THE PROTECT COLLEGE SPORTS ACT" as "a great Bill" and urged the Senate to "hopefully stay in D.C. until it passes."
Trump outlined dire consequences if the bill does not become law, asserting that "millions of young Athletes will be hurt, programs will be canceled, Women's and Olympic Sports will go away, the fans will be robbed, and Universities will go broke."
He further emphasized his role in safeguarding female athletes, stating, "Nobody has done more to protect Women Athletes than me — and this Bill CLEARLY protects the Laws in 27 States protecting Women's Sports, and banning Men from Women's Sports."
Trump then challenged critics, declaring, "Anyone who tells you differently is LYING! Stop grandstanding, and try getting this done. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
Prior Remarks and Clarifications
These recent comments from the former president, pushing for congressional action on the bill, followed similar statements he made just a day earlier.
While hosting U.S. Olympians at the White House Rose Garden, Trump called on both chambers of Congress to collaborate, ideally in a bipartisan manner, to send the legislation to him.
He affirmed his intention to sign it, remarking on Thursday, "I’m urging the House and the Senate to come together, bipartisan if possible, and it looks like they have done, to send the bill to my desk and I will sign it. I think we have no choice."
He stressed the imperative nature of its passage, adding, "We have to get that done. If we don’t, we’re very foolish. Nobody knows what will happen. We’re in Never-Never Land. We’re not going to let that be happening. We’re not going to let that happen to these great people and others."
Concurrently, the White House issued an official memo on Friday, aiming to dispel any misunderstandings regarding the "Protect College Sports Act." The memo clarified that the proposed legislation would not supersede existing state laws that prohibit biological men from participating in women's athletic competitions, confirming that states would retain their authority to legislate on this specific matter.
