The passing of former NBA player Brandon Clarke has been officially attributed to an accidental drug overdose, according to an announcement from authorities on Friday.
Clarke, who was 29 years old, was discovered deceased on May 11 at his residence in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's report, released Friday, cited "the effects of heroin and cocaine" as the cause of death. Investigators also located drug paraphernalia within his home at the time of his death.
A Promising NBA Career
Originally selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder as a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Clarke's draft rights were subsequently traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the rights to Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick. He quickly established himself with the Grizzlies, earning the Most Valuable Player title at the 2019 NBA Summer League. The Vancouver native made history as only the second non-American player to receive this distinction. Clarke dedicated seven years to the Grizzlies organization, primarily serving as a key contributor off the bench.
During his rookie season in 2019-20, he was named to the All-Rookie team, averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Across his 309 career games, Clarke maintained averages of 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.8 minutes on the court per contest.
Injuries and Legal Difficulties
The most recent NBA season proved challenging for Clarke, as he participated in only two games. His absence began with recovery from right knee surgery, followed by a right calf strain that sidelined him for the majority of the season. In March, the Memphis team confirmed that Clarke was still undergoing rehabilitation for his injury, with tests indicating a need for additional healing time. The expectation at that point was for him to rejoin the team the following season.
Beyond his physical ailments, Clarke faced legal issues in April. He was arrested in Arkansas and booked on multiple charges, including improper passing, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing from law enforcement, exceeding the speed limit, and trafficking a controlled substance. A court appearance had been scheduled for May 15.
Before his professional career, Clarke was a standout player for Gonzaga University. His journey from college star to a valued NBA role player was marked by both on-court achievements and recent personal struggles.
