Indiana Fever sensation Caitlin Clark was initially set to incur a one-game suspension after being assessed what was recorded as her eighth technical foul of the current season on Saturday. However, the Women's National Basketball Association swiftly intervened to reverse the decision.
The league has officially rescinded the technical foul given to the star guard during the Fever's recent victory over the Chicago Sky. This action eliminates the penalty that would have automatically sidelined Clark for an upcoming game.
Had the technical foul remained in effect, Clark would have been unable to participate in Tuesday's significant matchup against the New York Liberty. This would have represented a considerable setback for the Indiana squad as they navigate their ongoing season.
Incident Details and Clark's Response
A spokesperson for the WNBA confirmed to The Associated Press that the technical foul had been overturned just a few hours following the conclusion of the game.
The incident occurred during the third quarter of the contest when Clark made contact with a referee after being forced out of bounds. She was subsequently issued the technical foul. The Fever ultimately secured a 90-86 victory in the game.
Clark promptly advocated for the technical foul's removal, stating after the game that the contact was unintentional and did not involve any verbal confrontation. With a potential suspension looming, Clark conveyed her optimism that the league would review the play and ultimately overturn the call.
"She said I ran into her," Clark explained regarding the official's reasoning. "I've already reviewed the footage. So, we'll allow the league to make its determination. But, it wasn't anything deliberate or intentional. So, I'm hopeful it gets rescinded. And, nothing was exchanged verbally."
