New Video Details Deadly Idaho In-N-Out Rampage, Heroic Citizen and Off-Duty Trooper Responses

Recently unveiled video footage provides a detailed account of a deadly rampage through a Twin Falls, Idaho, In-N-Out Burger and its vicinity last week, an incident that claimed three lives and injured seven people.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks presented a comprehensive timeline and redacted video footage of the August 1 attack. The visuals illustrate the progression of the shooting and the efforts of an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper, a former law enforcement officer, and an armed civilian who confronted the assailant while patrons and staff sought safety.

Law enforcement previously identified the perpetrator as Chad Williams, 24, and believe he acted without accomplices. The motive behind the assault remains undetermined by authorities.

Chief Hicks stated on Friday that the police department chose not to mention Williams by name during the briefing, citing respect for the victims and a commitment to highlight their experiences.

According to police, emergency dispatchers received the initial 911 call reporting an active shooter at the In-N-Out establishment at 2:29 p.m.

Initial Confrontation and Heroic Actions

The video footage commences with the gunman entering the restaurant's drive-thru lane, where police reported he fatally shot Ashley Garibay, an employee. He then advanced, exited his vehicle, and used a handgun to kill Christopher Claunch, a patron, also in the drive-thru area.

Austin James Scott, known as “AJ,” a former Twin Falls police officer and Idaho State Police trooper, reportedly moved towards the sound of gunfire and engaged the assailant. Police indicated Scott drew his handgun but was subsequently assisted into a vehicle by others to receive aid for significant blood loss.

On Friday, police clarified that Scott was distinct from the off-duty Idaho State Police trooper who also responded to the incident, correcting earlier inaccuracies circulating online.

The assailant then retrieved a rifle from his Honda Civic, while concurrently, an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper inside the restaurant was facilitating the evacuation of employees and customers and actively searching for the shooter.

Police-released video depicts an exchange of gunfire between the trooper and the gunman. A civilian attempting to aid the trooper and render assistance to a victim inside the restaurant was also shot, according to police.

Escalation and Further Violence

The shooter then proceeded towards Blue Lakes Boulevard, where law enforcement reported he shot three individuals who were stationary at a traffic light.

An armed citizen engaged the gunman, who then fled in the direction of a nearby Tesla charging station, police reported.

At the charging station, police stated the gunman shot an individual inside one Tesla vehicle before fatally shooting Dale Schultz and injuring Schultz's passenger in a separate Tesla.

The Pursuit and Tragic End

As officers converged, the gunman advanced towards the Twin Falls Visitors Center and an adjacent trail, police reported. While many evacuated the visitors center, three individuals took shelter inside as the assailant entered.

Law enforcement indicated an employee later confronted the gunman on the trail, creating an opportunity for others to flee.

Officers pursued him towards the canyon, where a law enforcement official located him near the precipice behind a shopping center. Police confirmed the gunman succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his body subsequently fell into the canyon.

Following this, officers returned to assist victims, while firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency responders delivered aid.

Police emphasized that the collaborative efforts of civilians, employees, and initial responders were instrumental in saving lives during the incident.

Investigators continue their efforts to ascertain the motivation behind the shooting.
