Mike Mazzei, a former state senator and financial planner in Oklahoma, secured the Republican nomination for governor after winning a primary runoff election on Tuesday evening. His victory came with the significant endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
Mazzei triumphed over Gentner Drummond, Oklahoma’s current attorney general, positioning him as a strong contender for the state's next governor. This outcome also represents a political win for incumbent Governor Kevin Stitt, who has been a long-standing opponent of Drummond.
Political Rivalries and Endorsements Shape the Race
The rivalry between Governor Stitt and Attorney General Drummond has been marked by legal disputes, strongly worded correspondence, and public critiques. Stitt previously characterized Drummond as a "longtime political enemy" in comments to local media.
Their contention primarily revolves around Drummond's criticisms of Oklahoma's poultry industry, which he accuses of causing decades of phosphorus pollution in the state's water sources. Governor Stitt has contested these claims, arguing that Drummond's actions exceed his authority as attorney general and cautioning that legal action against these businesses could jeopardize jobs and the state's vital agricultural sector.
Governor Stitt publicly endorsed Mazzei, expressing his desire for "we want a pro-business governor in there to take the lead for the next four years."
Due to term limits, Governor Stitt was ineligible to seek re-election, which led to a competitive field of candidates vying for his position. Following the initial primary election on June 2, no single candidate managed to secure the required 50% of the vote to clinch the nomination directly. Consequently, only Drummond and Mazzei proceeded to the runoff election.
Mirroring Governor Stitt's support, former President Donald Trump also endorsed Mazzei, referring to him as a "MAGA warrior." In a May post on Truth Social, Trump lauded Mazzei, stating,
"As a successful Businessman, and former Chairman of the State Senate Finance Committee, and later, as Oklahoma’s Secretary of Budget, Mike knows the AMERICA FIRST Policies required to Grow our Economy, Create GREAT Jobs, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., and Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE."
Mazzei's Platform and Drummond's Record
Mazzei's campaign centered on commitments to reduce taxes, alongside other proposed reforms for state governance. In a campaign video shared on Instagram, Mazzei outlined his fiscal policy vision:
"I have a detailed plan to eliminate Oklahoma’s income tax in six years. I have a plan to eliminate property taxes for seniors and veterans."
Beyond tax restructuring, Mazzei's platform also emphasized restricting foreign nationals from acquiring state land, strengthening Oklahoma's educational framework, and enhancing government spending accountability.
Conversely, Mazzei sought to portray Drummond as a less conservative Republican, criticizing him for advocating for government expansion. Mazzei asserted,
"His solution to every problem is to raise taxes and grow government."He further added,
"He doesn’t understand money and finance. Crunching numbers is a skill you pick up when you earn your wealth rather than inherit it."
Drummond, a rancher from a long-standing family and a veteran fighter pilot, focused his campaign on his achievements as attorney general. His campaign website highlighted his efforts against Chinese criminal organizations involved in illicit marijuana cultivation, noting the closure of thousands of such operations and his emphasis on immigration law enforcement.
In a campaign video, Drummond stated,
"As a tough-on-crime attorney general and decorated fighter pilot, I have proven I will always fight for our freedom and defend our values."He also affirmed,
"I’ll keep standing strong with President Trump to secure the border, deport illegals and stop the flow of drugs and crime."
The Club for Growth, a conservative advocacy group promoting lower taxes and free-market principles, which provided $9 million in support of Mazzei, commended his primary victory. A spokesperson for the Club for Growth remarked on Drummond, stating,
"Meanwhile, Gentner Drummond has spent his career putting radical education bureaucrats ahead of families by opposing school freedom. The message is clear, if you oppose school freedom and call yourself a Republican, expect to lose your next primary."
Looking Ahead to the General Election
With the primary concluded, Mazzei is now slated to compete against Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson, who serves as the House minority leader in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The general election is scheduled for November 3.
