Jim Schwartzel Secures GOP Nomination in Florida, Overcoming Trump's Endorsement of Opponent
Florida media executive Jim Schwartzel emerged victorious in a crowded and unusual Republican primary, despite his challenger receiving a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Florida media executive Jim Schwartzel has clinched the Republican nomination for the state's 19th Congressional District, triumphing over his opponent, Catalina Lauf, who had received a significant endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
The former president's backing of Lauf, who previously served in the Department of Commerce during his administration, came on August 13, just days before voters headed to the polls. This result stands out against a broader trend where candidates endorsed by Trump have largely succeeded in primary contests.
As of mid-July, data from Ballotpedia's election tracker indicated that approximately 97% of candidates endorsed by the former president had won their primaries. Trump's endorsement success rate has consistently remained at 93% or higher since 2018.
A Contested Primary Field
The race to succeed Representative Byron Donalds in Florida’s 19th Congressional District attracted a diverse and often commented-upon group of candidates, not limited to Lauf and Schwartzel.
The field included former Representative Madison Cawthorn, who lost his North Carolina seat in 2022 following a series of controversies; former Representative Chris Collins, a New York congressman previously convicted of insider trading; and Jim Oberweis, a wealthy former state senator from Illinois.
The unusual collection of individuals vying for the seat drew both amusement and criticism from national media outlets. One publication famously labeled the contest "the GOP's carpetbagger primary," noting that "whoever claws their way through the circus-like primary is almost guaranteed a ticket to Washington."
Campaign Trail Clashes
During the campaign, Schwartzel frequently criticized Lauf for her previous congressional bids in Illinois and her recent relocation to Florida, asserting his deeper ties to the state.
Lauf countered these criticisms by describing herself as a "blue state refugee" rather than a "carpetbagger." She articulated her position during a July debate, stating,
"I came here, I didn’t have a choice to be born and raised in Illinois, but I have a choice to live here."
Lauf also accused Schwartzel of playing a role in the dismissal of a popular local meteorologist. Schwartzel, who owns several local media outlets, denied the allegation, clarifying that he did not hold an ownership stake in the specific network that had employed the meteorologist.
Navigating the Trump Endorsement
Schwartzel shared that his supporters expressed considerable frustration following Trump's endorsement of Lauf. On the evening the endorsement was announced, he addressed his constituents directly:
"The President endorsed my opponent tonight. You're hearing it from me before you hear it anywhere else," he stated. "But let's be precise about where that anger belongs. Not with President Trump — I've supported him from the beginning and I'll support him after Tuesday. It belongs with the operation that worked this for months: the out-of-state super PACs that have poured millions into this district, the Washington consultants who packaged a candidate who ran for Congress twice in Illinois and sold her as Southwest Florida's choice, the people who decided our seat shouldn’t be settled in a room a thousand miles from here."
Schwartzel's victory underscores a notable instance where a candidate prevailed despite a late intervention from the former president, providing a rare counterpoint to Trump's otherwise formidable primary endorsement record.
