California Highway Patrol Seizes 30 Pounds of Cocaine Valued Over $800,000 During Routine Traffic Stop

Law enforcement officials in California recently confiscated over $800,000 in suspected cocaine following a traffic stop.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that on August 12, a canine officer from its Central Division initiated a stop of a 2025 Honda CR-V in Merced County due to an alleged traffic infraction.

During the encounter, the officer observed "several indicators of possible criminal activity," according to details released by the CHP.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly revealed a bag containing approximately 30 pounds of suspected cocaine. Authorities estimate the street value of the seized narcotics to be $817,200.

The driver was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Merced County Main Jail. Charges against the individual include possession of cocaine with intent to sell and transportation of cocaine across non-contiguous counties, as stated by officials.

The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET).

Recent Significant Drug Interdictions

This recent seizure follows another substantial drug interdiction last month, when federal authorities discovered over 1,000 pounds of cocaine. The illicit substance was found concealed beneath the floorboards of a commercial truck as it entered the United States from Mexico. This particular operation stands out as one of the largest drug busts recorded in Southern California this year.

The Justice Department reported that more than half a ton of cocaine was located within the floorboards of both a truck and its accompanying flatbed trailer at the Calexico Port of Entry, situated along the California-Mexico border. The estimated street value for that quantity of cocaine surpassed $20 million.

Cross-Border Drug Concealment Tactics

In a separate incident also from last month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers announced the discovery of over $3.7 million worth of cocaine ingeniously hidden within a shipment of cucumbers.

This find occurred at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, where CBP officers identified 112 packages inside a tractor-trailer. The discovery was made after a canine inspection and a non-intrusive imaging scan revealed irregularities within the vehicle.

The packages collectively contained 278.88 pounds of cocaine, which CBP estimated to have a street value of $3,723,654.
