In a period of immense personal adversity, Za'Darius Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher, is rejoining the National Football League, finding renewed purpose with the Atlanta Falcons. His return to the gridiron follows an intensely challenging time during which he lost his mother, grandmother, and father in quick succession, mere months after stepping away from the sport.
The 33-year-old defensive end, who has played for six different franchises over 11 seasons, had initially considered retirement when he departed from the Philadelphia Eagles mid-season in October 2025. However, as he grappled with profound personal sorrow, an unexpected call from Atlanta presented a path back to the game, transforming it into a much-needed sanctuary.
Navigating Grief and Finding a Path Back
Speaking to reporters recently, Smith openly discussed the heartbreak he experienced and his journey toward healing. "I was in a dark place," he revealed, reflecting on the period following his family losses.
Before ultimately signing with Atlanta, his seventh NFL team, Smith visited with the Cleveland Browns. He emphasized that football became an essential outlet during what he described as a brutal stretch in his life.
"This is my happy place," Smith stated. "Come back, play football. I was in a dark place, but, you know, coming out, running out on the field, the fans, not just the fans, man, the joy that I get from winning and just getting sacks."
A poignant motivation for his move to Atlanta was also rooted in a cherished family wish. "My mom, rest her soul, man, she always wanted me to be in Atlanta with the Falcons," he shared.
Impact on the Falcons and Future Goals
Smith's addition provides crucial pass-rushing reinforcement for the Falcons, especially following a season-ending ACL injury to Jalon Walker and an eight-game suspension for James Pearce Jr.
Since entering the league in 2015, Smith has maintained a consistent record of strong production. His career statistics include 343 total tackles, 70.5 sacks, 16 pass deflections, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Smith will celebrate his 34th birthday around the start of the upcoming season.
Looking ahead, the veteran defensive end has set an ambitious personal milestone. "Now I'm trying to reach 100 [sacks]. However I need to do that, I'm going to try," he affirmed.
