While the calendar still points to summer, a distinct festive spirit recently enveloped a city in Denmark. Amidst a persistent European heatwave, Aalborg, the nation's fourth-largest city, transformed into a vibrant Christmas scene. Hundreds of individuals portraying Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and various Christmas elves journeyed from across the globe to participate in the annual World Santa Claus Congress.
This colorful and long-standing tradition, held decades before the actual holiday season, consistently brings joy to observers. Throughout the week, Aalborg's streets were awash with red suits, flowing white beards, and an abundance of holiday cheer. Professional Santas marched through the city center, graciously posed for photographs with onlookers, and engaged in various games and friendly competitions, all under the July sun. The unusual spectacle of dozens of Santas in their traditional, warm attire was particularly striking this year, given the extreme temperatures gripping central and Southern Europe.
A Tradition Spanning Decades
The World Santa Claus Congress began its journey in 1957 at an amusement park situated near Copenhagen. Two years ago, the event found a new home in Aalborg, located on Denmark's Jutland peninsula. Next year, this cherished annual gathering is set to commemorate its 70th anniversary.
Global Gathering for Holiday Professionals
Initially conceived as an entertainment event for children, the congress has evolved considerably. It now serves as a significant meeting point for the dedicated men and women who embody Santa Claus and his North Pole companions during the festive period, appearing in retail stores, shopping centers, and special holiday events worldwide. Attendees traveled from diverse nations, including Norway and Japan, to connect with peers. The congress offers a unique opportunity for participants to share personal experiences, compare the quality of their beards, refine their performance skills, and collectively gear up for another demanding Christmas season.
The packed agenda featured a variety of engaging activities, such as gingerbread-eating contests, spirited gift-wrapping competitions, and balloon modeling workshops. Several lively parades also wound their way through Aalborg's sun-drenched streets, spreading cheer to residents and visitors alike.
Peter Gislund, who organizes the event and also portrays Santa Claus in Aalborg during Christmas, shared his observations regarding public reactions.
"The grandmas say: 'Oh, it's too early to come here,'" Gislund noted.
However, the response from younger audiences remained consistent with children's typical excitement upon encountering Santa Claus.
"The kids say: 'Hooray! Santa's here already,'" he added.
