An immense explosion involving hundreds of pounds of fireworks recently shook an island community in Western Washington, demolishing multiple residences and causing injuries to five individuals, including three firefighters, authorities confirmed.
The inferno is believed to have originated from an individual smoking in close proximity to a stash of fireworks stored at a residence within the Lagoon Point neighborhood, according to Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue Chief Jerry Helm. Helm described fireworks as “a little ticking time bomb,” adding, “you’re not sure when they’re going to go off.”
Investigation and Casualties
The Island County Sheriff’s Office reported in a statement issued Thursday that three firefighters sustained injuries during the blast. They had initially responded to a call regarding a house fire in the area on Wednesday afternoon. Two of the injured firefighters are currently recuperating at home, while the third is anticipated to be discharged from the hospital in the near future.
Additionally, two civilians transported themselves to the hospital for medical attention before emergency personnel could assess their conditions, the statement noted.
The sheriff’s office indicated that once the investigation concludes, a determination will be made regarding whether any criminal charges are appropriate. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also participating in the ongoing inquiry.
Residents Describe Devastation
The initial residence where the fireworks were stored was completely destroyed, as was an adjacent home that subsequently ignited. A third property also sustained damage from the explosive event.
Tanya Hernandez-Garzon, a neighbor whose home was among those lost, described the scene, stating the fireworks were “exploding and shooting everywhere.”
It’s sad to see somebody so immature that they don’t think of other people and to see how much damage is done is really heartbreaking.
Fortunately, Hernandez-Garzon managed to rescue her five dogs and pet bird from the blaze. She emphasized her priority during the emergency: “Our main concern was to get the dogs out of the house. Everything else is replaceable, but not my animals.”
That night, she resorted to sleeping in her truck, and she remains uncertain about her future housing arrangements.
