Wes Watson, a prominent social media fitness influencer, pleaded guilty on Thursday to aggravated battery charges linked to a violent altercation at a Miami-Dade County gym. The resolution of the case comes ahead of his scheduled sentencing later this month.
The 42-year-old influencer formalized his plea in a Miami-Dade County courtroom as part of an agreement negotiated with prosecutors. Under the terms of this deal, prosecutors have put forth a recommendation for a 21-month prison sentence. This proposed sentence accounts for time Watson has already served and would be followed by seven years of probation, along with a mandate for court-ordered mental health treatment.
Watson's sentencing hearing is slated for July 17.
Details of the Gym Confrontation
Watson, who garnered a significant online following as a motivational and fitness personality after his release from prison, was charged following an incident on December 29, 2024, at Elevation Fitness in Miami-Dade County.
Across various social media platforms, Watson has cultivated an audience of millions. His content typically centers on themes of fitness, personal discipline, entrepreneurship, and his experiences post-incarceration.
According to an arrest affidavit, Watson informed responding law enforcement officers that he was engaged in a workout when the victim approached him, allegedly expressing a desire to fight. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the gym, which reportedly depicted Watson striking the man with a weightlifting belt during the confrontation.
Defense Highlights Victim's Intent
During the court proceedings on Thursday, Watson's legal representative contended that the circumstances surrounding the incident were unusual. The defense attorney, Eric Clayman, asserted that the alleged victim intentionally sought out his client due to Watson's substantial online presence and notoriety.
"There's been a lot that's been argued in this case about stand your ground," defense attorney Eric Clayman stated, according to reports. "What's unique is you have an alleged victim that sought somebody out because of his presence online. This guy bought a plane ticket, came through New Jersey, showed up at the gym for the sole purpose of confronting Mr. Watson. That turned into something else."
Separate Legal Challenges
This Miami-Dade case is distinct from several other felony charges Watson is currently facing in neighboring Broward County. Prosecutors in Broward County have filed charges against him including felony battery, aggravated assault, and witness tampering. These charges also encompass allegations related to a domestic violence incident reportedly involving his girlfriend. All these Broward County charges remain pending.
