A series of powerful tremors has left hundreds dead and thousands missing, prompting a significant international humanitarian response.

A series of powerful earthquakes has caused widespread devastation across Venezuela this week, with the confirmed death toll now reaching at least 589 individuals. Reports indicate that at least 2,980 people have sustained injuries, and thousands more are still unaccounted for as rescue operations intensify across the affected regions.
The casualty figures are projected to rise further as recovery efforts continue in the wake of two major tremors, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5. These seismic events struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday night, approximately 120 miles west of the capital, Caracas.
Venezuelan state television has broadcast harrowing images depicting the urgent rescue efforts. One particularly dramatic scene showed a woman trapped beneath a concrete slab, with only a bare foot visible, before responders successfully extricated her alive. Numerous injured individuals, including children and animals, have been pulled from the debris, often covered in dust and blood, highlighting the scale of the human impact.
International Aid Mobilized as US Military Arrives
In response to the escalating crisis, U.S. military leadership has arrived in Caracas to assist in coordinating international relief efforts. U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard landed in the Venezuelan capital on Thursday, tasked with overseeing the Department of War’s support for the earthquake relief operations.
This deployment follows the Trump administration's activation of a comprehensive, government-wide humanitarian response. The United States has committed $150 million in aid and dispatched U.S. Navy warships to contribute to critical life-saving rescue missions.
U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) released a statement indicating that Maj. Gen. Jarrard is serving as the senior U.S. official on the ground. His role involves close collaboration with partners to plan, coordinate, and direct the U.S. military’s extensive logistical and operational capabilities. This support is crucial for the swift and vital movement of response personnel, equipment, and humanitarian assistance into the areas most affected. SOUTHCOM confirmed that Venezuela’s interim government, led by acting President Delcy Rodríguez, formally requested American assistance.
Further details from SOUTHCOM outlined that assigned U.S. military forces would utilize both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft. These assets are intended to provide specialized mobility services and support U.S. Government personnel, search and rescue teams, and partners involved in assessing damage and delivering essential life-saving assistance.
La Guaira Coastal Region Declared Disaster Zone Amid Heavy Damage
The coastal region of La Guaira, situated north of Caracas, has borne the brunt of the seismic activity, experiencing some of the most severe damage and a high number of casualties. The country's primary airport, located in La Guaira, has been closed due to structural damage, significantly complicating the delivery of much-needed aid.
Amidst the widespread destruction, a retired schoolteacher named Juan Alberto Mendaño navigated through the wreckage in La Guaira. He recounted climbing past a deceased individual when he spotted a woman trapped and signaling for help with her hand. Mendaño reportedly expressed, “May God rescue her as quickly as possible,” adding, “When we heard the scream, there was nothing we could do.”
Venezuelan authorities have announced the redirection of rescue teams from other parts of the nation towards La Guaira to bolster the response efforts. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez also issued an appeal on Thursday, urging businesses to provide heavy construction equipment to aid in the ongoing rescue operations.
Referring to La Guaira as a “disaster zone,” Rodríguez voiced the government's urgent goal: “We hope to rescue as many living people as possible.”
