USA Powerlifting Endorses Supreme Court Ruling Upholding State Laws on Transgender Athletes in Women's Sports

USA Powerlifting has voiced its approval for the Supreme Court's recent decision, which reinforces state legislation concerning the involvement of transgender athletes in girls' and women's competitive sports.

The Supreme Court delivered a 6-3 ruling in favor of states that had faced legal challenges from biological males seeking to compete in female sports categories.

A Landmark Decision for Women's Sports

USA Powerlifting itself became entangled in this debate when it was sued in 2021 by transgender lifter JayCee Cooper. Cooper's legal action followed her rejection from the women's team three years prior. Following Tuesday's significant ruling, the organization communicated a sense of relief.

“The highest court in the land has affirmed what we've argued for six years: protecting women's sports is common sense and not discrimination,” stated Larry Maile, past president of USA Powerlifting, in a recent release. “The law has caught up with the science and now Minnesota is even more of a legal outlier. It is out of step with the U.S. Supreme Court, overwhelming public opinion and international sport governing organizations.”
