U.S. Military Deployment and Logistics
The United States military continued its humanitarian relief operations in Venezuela on Friday, delivering the final units of ten U.S. Marine Corps Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVRs). These vehicles are intended to support victims of the previous week's severe earthquakes and facilitate broader humanitarian assistance.
On Friday, a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster cargo aircraft completed the transport of the last of the ten MTVRs. These vehicles are crucial for aiding disaster victims and relief personnel on the ground.
According to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the crews operating these MTVRs will play a vital role in logistics, ensuring that urgently needed assistance reaches affected local communities.
The Marine Corps notes that over 1,000 MTVRs have seen extensive service in various contingency operations, including deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as numerous humanitarian missions.
At Simón Bolívar International Airport, which serves the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, the U.S. military’s Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Center (HACC) has been collaborating closely with local authorities, the State Department, and other agencies present to coordinate and support disaster relief efforts.
SOUTHCOM also provided an update on Friday, indicating that Marine, Navy, and Army vertical-lift and rotary-wing aircraft were actively conducting airlift and transport flights. These operations included the delivery of pre-packaged, self-contained meals for individuals who survived the earthquakes and those who have been displaced.
The USS Fort Lauderdale is currently stationed at the Port of La Guaira, where it is facilitating communications and serving as a key distribution hub for aid.
Broader U.S. Government Response
The Trump administration has stepped in to offer comprehensive support to the South American nation following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck last week. This commitment includes mobilizing $150 million in humanitarian relief funds.
Furthermore, the administration has assembled a specialized Disaster Assistance Response Team. This team comprises more than 250 individuals, including three highly trained Urban Search-and-Rescue teams.
The tragic death toll from the natural disaster has reached nearly 2,000 and is regrettably still increasing.
