During a United Nations Security Council session this week, the U.S. Ambassador, Mike Waltz, directly challenged Iran, asserting that Tehran would not be able to silence the international body. This confrontation arose after the Islamic Republic's envoy accused council members of disseminating untruths regarding recent assaults on neighboring Gulf nations.
Waltz addressed Iranian diplomat Amir Saeid Iravani directly, stating,
"Let me remind you where you are. This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations Security Council. You will not silence this body."
These pointed comments from Ambassador Waltz occurred during an urgent council assembly convened in the wake of drone and missile strikes launched against Bahrain and Kuwait on Sunday, which themselves followed recent U.S. aerial operations targeting Iran.
In his address, Iravani contended that the council's meeting was unwarranted, and he proceeded to accuse the United States, Bahrain, and other participating members of fabricating information.
Iravani declared,
"Once again, the representative of the United States has resorted to lies and disinformation against Iran in a desperate attempt to justify the US's unlawful acts of aggression."
He further dismissed what he termed "unfounded accusations made by certain Western members of the Council and the representative of Bahrain." Iravani emphasized,
"Instead of addressing the root cause of the current crisis, they have ignored the unlawful aggression committed against Iran and sought to shift blame onto the victim. Their double standards and hypocritical behavior have deprived them of any credibility to lecture others."
Diplomatic Tensions Escalate
Ambassador Waltz later reiterated his firm stance on the social media platform X, asserting,
"Iran will not silence us on our own soil. That might work in Tehran, but not in the UN Security Council. We will tell the truth."
During their interaction, Waltz presented what he identified as visual evidence of the aftermath of the Iranian strikes. These images reportedly depicted a family's residence in Bahrain obliterated by a Shahed drone, a hotel occupied by tourists that suffered damage, and a facility utilized by emergency services which Waltz claimed was intentionally targeted.
Addressing the representative, Waltz challenged,
"Are they lying? Is this hypocrisy? Is this what this council is here to denounce today? I ask the representative, are these lies? … I'd say not."
Bahrain Details Extensive Attacks
Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, provided a detailed account, stating that since February 28, the island nation has endured a total of 808 aggressive acts. These included 203 ballistic missile launches and 605 attacks by armed drones.
Al Zayani specified that
"These attacks deliberately targeted civilian facilities, critical infrastructure and residential areas, resulting in the deaths of three innocent civilians and injuries to 465 others."He explicitly refuted Tehran's assertion that its aggressive actions were confined solely to military targets.
Broader Regional Conflict
Both Washington and Tehran have frequently exchanged accusations of breaching a delicate ceasefire accord. On June 27, President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces had carried out strikes against Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar installations, in response to Iran's violation of the agreement.
Officials indicated that the escalation of hostilities commenced when an Iranian drone targeted a merchant vessel off the coast of Oman last week, prompting a retaliatory response from the U.S. military.
In a post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump issued a stern warning:
"It is very possible that they will never learn! There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!"
