This week, the football community was taken aback when Bill Belichick did not secure enough votes for a first-ballot induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, despite his unparalleled coaching career. The decision sent shockwaves throughout the sport, leaving many, including his former New England Patriots stars Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, openly surprised.
Danny Amendola, a skilled wide receiver who earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots during Belichick’s tenure, was among those who found it difficult to believe his former coach wouldn't be a first-time inductee.
The unexpected outcome for Belichick has now prompted discussions about whether Amendola and other former Patriots players might witness a similar scenario for Tom Brady, who becomes eligible for Hall of Fame consideration in 2028. Could Brady also face a delay in his induction?
Amendola expressed his strong reluctance to even contemplate such a possibility.

One factor reportedly contributing to Belichick’s omission from first-ballot Hall of Fame status involved his connection to the Spygate and Deflategate controversies, incidents that cast a shadow over aspects of his time with the Patriots.
Specifically concerning Deflategate, Brady was implicated for his awareness of underinflated footballs used during the 45-7 AFC Championship Game victory against the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, an incident that resulted in a four-game suspension.
Given that voters reportedly considered these past controversies for Belichick, the question arises: is it truly a far-fetched notion that Brady might also have to await his turn for Hall of Fame entry, mirroring his legendary coach's experience?
Brady's Unrivaled Legacy
However, it would be an extraordinary deviation from expectations if Brady were not to achieve first-ballot induction.
Brady holds the record for the most Super Bowl championships won by any individual player in NFL history, accumulating seven titles throughout his career—six with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He stands as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards with 89,214, pass completions with 7,753, and passing touchdowns with 649.
Over 23 seasons, Brady started a record-setting 333 games and is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time. If these accomplishments do not warrant first-ballot recognition, then it's difficult to imagine who would.
Therefore, Amendola hopes that when the time comes to vote Brady into Canton, his induction is swift and undisputed. Nevertheless, after witnessing what transpired with Belichick, it seems no individual, regardless of their extensive list of accolades, is an absolute certainty for immediate Hall of Fame enshrinement.
Amendola's "Salute to Service" Event
Beyond discussions of football legacies, Amendola recently engaged with active service members during USAA’s Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp, an event that marked the first collaboration of its kind between the Patriots organization and USAA.
Service members from Naval Submarine Base New London, Naval Station Newport, Joint Base Cape Cod, and Hanscom Air Force Base participated, receiving coaching from Amendola. They competed in drills designed to evaluate players, similar to those used by NFL coaches, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, and three-cone shuttle.
Amendola observed the service members' intense competition, noting one impressive individual who completed the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds.
These guys are going really hard. They’re having a blast. You can tell they’re smiling from ear to ear and really having fun. It’s great to have them out here — they do so much for our country. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. So, just getting out here, spreading the love of the game, and having some fun doing it. It’s awesome to be a part of.
Amendola also shared a personal connection to military service.
I have a huge appreciation for the military. I was actually going to go to the military if I didn’t get a scholarship to go play football. …It’s awesome to hear their stories, their day-to-day lives.
