Former Texas Middle School Teacher Sentenced to 33 Years for Sexual Abuse of 13-Year-Old Student

A former middle school teacher in Texas has been handed a prison sentence of more than three decades after being found guilty of sexually abusing a 13-year-old student.

Adriana Rullan, 30, was sentenced by a Webb County jury to 33 years in prison following her conviction for continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14. She also received sentences of 10 years for indecency with a child by sexual contact and 13 years for an improper relationship between an educator and a student. These sentences will run concurrently, meaning Rullan will serve a total of 33 years. Additionally, she was ordered to pay $20,000 in fines.

Trial Proceedings and Evidence

The verdict came after a two-day trial held in the 341st District Court. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented testimony from six witnesses and introduced a substantial amount of evidence. This evidence included dozens of exhibits such as text messages, photographs, and video recordings pertinent to the case.

Victim and Family Testimonies

During the sentencing phase, the victim, who was 13 years old at the time of the abuse, addressed the jurors. He spoke about the profound impact the abuse had on his life, stating that it cost him his friendships, his sense of self, and nearly his life.

The victim's mother also delivered a statement to the jury, attributing her son's subsequent depression and anxiety to Rullan's actions. She detailed the emotional toll the abuse had taken on their family and described Rullan as manipulative, asserting that she should never again be permitted to harm a child.

The jury reached its guilty verdicts after deliberating for less than two hours, according to information released by the Webb County District Attorney's Office.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into Rullan began on November 27, 2023. This was prompted by the victim's parents contacting the United Independent School District Police Department with allegations of an inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher at Gonzalez Middle School in Laredo.

A forensic examination of the victim's cellphone proved crucial to the investigation. This examination successfully recovered electronic communications that documented the illicit relationship, providing significant evidence to support the charges. Rullan was subsequently arrested the following month. She entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.

It remains unclear at this time whether Rullan plans to appeal her conviction and sentence.
