For nearly four decades, the state of Texas has consistently elected Republican candidates to the U.S. Senate. However, a recently released survey suggests a potential shift in the political landscape, indicating that Democrats may have a viable path to victory in the upcoming election.
A New York Times/Siena poll, published on Tuesday, reveals that Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico and Republican nominee Ken Paxton, the state's long-serving attorney general, are currently tied with 47% support among likely Texas voters.
Mr. Paxton, who secured the Republican nomination last month by defeating long-term GOP incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, a victory that followed an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, is now facing off against Mr. Talarico, a state representative considered an emerging figure in the Democratic Party. This closely watched contest is among a handful of races nationwide that could ultimately determine whether Republicans maintain their narrow majority in the Senate.
Paxton's Political and Personal Hurdles
The poll results highlight several significant challenges for Mr. Paxton, whose political career has been marked by a series of scandals and legal entanglements spanning the last decade. In 2023, the Texas House of Representatives voted to impeach him, though he was subsequently acquitted of all charges by the state Senate. Beyond his legal battles, Mr. Paxton is also navigating a tumultuous personal life, with his wife, state senator Angela Paxton, having filed for divorce last year, citing "biblical grounds" based on "recent discoveries."
The survey further indicates public perception issues for the Republican nominee. Fewer than four out of ten respondents believe Mr. Paxton possesses good character or appropriate moral values. Moreover, half of those surveyed consider Mr. Paxton, a prominent figure in the MAGA movement and a key leader in legal efforts to dispute the 2020 presidential election results, to be overly extreme.
Another concerning data point for Mr. Paxton is that his 47% support level falls below the 50% of respondents who expressed a preference for Republican control of the Senate in the next term.
Talarico's Rising Profile and Demographic Strengths
Meanwhile, Mr. Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative, is emerging as a formidable challenger. The former middle school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian, who secured the Democratic nomination after defeating progressive Representative Jasmine Crockett in the March primary, has also demonstrated impressive fundraising capabilities. He leads all Democratic Senate fundraisers, having amassed a substantial $27 million in the first quarter of this year alone.
The poll reveals Mr. Talarico's significant appeal across key demographics. He garners 61% support from Hispanic voters, a notable achievement given that former President Trump carried the Hispanic vote in Texas during the most recent presidential election. Additionally, Mr. Talarico holds a commanding 27-point lead over the 63-year-old Mr. Paxton among independent voters. The survey also uncovers a pronounced gender gap, with Mr. Talarico leading female voters by 18 points, while Mr. Paxton maintains an identical lead among male voters.
Key Challenges and the Economic Factor
Despite his recent gains, Mr. Talarico faces scrutiny from Republicans who have highlighted his past controversial statements, including suggestions that "God is nonbinary" or that there are six biological sexes. Mr. Paxton himself publicly derided the Democratic nominee in his victory speech last month, using terms such as "tofu Talarico," "six-gender Jimmy," "James Talafreako," and "low-T Talarico."
The Democratic Party brand itself may also pose an obstacle for Mr. Talarico, as a majority of respondents in the poll perceive Democrats as being too far to the left. Furthermore, following a contentious primary against Ms. Crockett, who is Black, the survey indicates that 12% of Black voters hold an unfavorable view of Mr. Talarico, who is White.
However, the economic climate appears to be working in Mr. Talarico's favor. Sixty percent of those polled expressed dissatisfaction with how former President Trump has managed cost-of-living issues, a sentiment that is unlikely to benefit Mr. Paxton. Mr. Talarico has capitalized on these concerns, emphasizing economic hardship in his campaign. In a recent advertisement, he is depicted leaving a grocery store, stating that "too many Texans feel like they’re drowning" amidst rising prices.
