A 63-year-old man, facing a terminal illness, recently fulfilled his long-held desire to marry his partner of two decades. Dean Pennell exchanged vows with Kay Beaman, 62, in an emotional ceremony held at Colchester Hospital in Essex, England, on June 18.
The couple's journey to the altar spanned 20 years since Pennell first proposed, with their wedding plans initially deferred to ensure they could provide for their combined family of ten children.
A Love Story Decades in the Making
Pennell and Beaman first met through their children 24 years ago in Basildon, Essex. Their connection quickly blossomed, leading to a proposal from Pennell early in their relationship.
However, with ten children between them, the couple made the conscious decision to put their family's needs first, setting aside wedding expenses to focus on their children's well-being. This meant their aspirations for marriage remained on hold for many years.
Beaman recounted the early days, stating, "Dean proposed when we first got together — but with 10 children between us, money would not allow."
An Expedited Celebration
The decision to finally marry came swiftly after Pennell, a former electroplater, received the devastating news that he had terminal cancer and only weeks left to live. The couple had originally planned to marry later in the year, but his prognosis prompted them to move the date forward significantly.
The hospital staff at Colchester Hospital played a pivotal role in making the dream a reality, organizing the entire event in less than a week. The intimate ceremony saw the couple surrounded by their extensive family, including all ten of their children and some of their eighteen grandchildren, along with other close friends.
"I am absolutely elated. We have waited a long time, and it’s so special to be able to celebrate our marriage here, with our families," the new wife expressed.
She added, "We were planning to get married this year, but with the situation as it was, we decided to bring the wedding forward."
A Day of Joy and Determination
Despite his advanced illness, Pennell was determined to fully participate in his wedding day. Beaman shared insights into his anticipation and resolve.
"It was very hard for Dean. He had been so excited in the lead-up to the wedding, and I would get a phone call from him at the hospital every morning telling me how many days there were to go until the wedding," she explained.
On the day itself, Pennell's commitment shone through. "When the day came, he was adamant, as difficult as it was, that he was going to stand up for as much as the ceremony as possible — and we had a lovely day," Beaman noted.
Reflecting on the effort, she mentioned, "He was exhausted afterward. Dean is now back at home, and we are living life to suit us."
Pennell himself shared his joy, saying, "It was absolutely brilliant. The staff worked really hard to organize the wedding."
Lucy Everett, a ward manager at the hospital, expressed her pleasure in assisting the couple. "It has been a pleasure to be able to help Dean and Kay. It’s rare that we get to celebrate a wedding at Colchester Hospital — it’s a first for me," she remarked.
As a memento of their special day, the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust presented the couple with a clock, displaying the precise time they exchanged their vows.
