Dramatic Footage Shows Electrical Room Explosion at Washington Apartment Complex

Intense video footage captured the moment an explosion erupted within an electrical room at an apartment complex in Washington state, sending flames and debris toward responding firefighters who were investigating reports of smoke on Sunday.
The striking imagery from Tacoma displayed a team of firefighters forcing entry into the electrical room, immediately followed by dense smoke pouring out. Mere seconds later, a forceful explosion tore through the doorway, shattering windows and propelling vertical blinds and other debris outwards as the firefighters quickly withdrew from the structure.
The individual recording the incident briefly diverted the camera after the blast. When the focus returned, emergency personnel could be seen checking on one another and moving further away from the damaged building.
The Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) later confirmed that neither firefighters nor residents sustained any injuries.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Fire crews were dispatched around 5:37 p.m. to an apartment complex located at 6400 S. 12th St., following calls about an explosion and smoke emanating from an electrical conduit, according to departmental statements. Fire alarms were activated after a resident pulled the alarm, prompting officials to evacuate buildings as a precautionary measure.
“Eight buildings evacuated indefinitely. No active fire.”
The Tacoma Fire Department announced in an update shared on X. Officials indicated that a malfunction in an electrical transformer pushed smoke into several buildings. Tacoma Public Utilities and fire investigators initiated an inquiry to pinpoint the exact cause. Residents from the evacuated apartments were temporarily sheltered at Hunt Middle School.
In a subsequent update, the department specified that the explosion took place inside the electrical room after firefighters had successfully de-energized the building.

The Tacoma Fire Department reiterated on X. Tacoma Public Utilities continued its investigation into the blast’s origin.
Investigation Underway
The utility company subsequently authorized residents to return to all buildings except the 600 building while crews worked to reinstate power. The American Red Cross provided assistance to individuals displaced from that particular building.
The Tacoma Fire Department stated that the investigation into the explosion remains ongoing.
