Smith posited that the financial success of the nation's leaders should be directly tied to the economic well-being of the American populace.
A Capitalist Society and Political Profits
During a recent episode of his podcast, Smith articulated his general view on politicians' earnings, including those of current President Donald Trump. "I don't give a damn what money politicians slide into their own pockets from time to time," Smith stated. "If the American people are prospering, get yours. It's a capitalistic society." This statement set the stage for his subsequent remarks concerning the wealth accumulation of past leaders.
Scrutinizing Former Presidents' Fortunes
Smith then turned his attention to former President Bill Clinton, expressing skepticism about the origins of his multi-million dollar net worth. "I’ll confess something to ya’ll," Smith continued. "Clinton was a lawyer in Arkansas. Grew up poor, relatively broke. How the hell him and the Clinton Foundation is worth hundreds of millions of dollars beat me."
He subsequently highlighted a similar pattern with former President Barack Obama. "Barack Obama was a community organizer who became the president of the United States and, last time I checked, that salary ain't over $450,000, if I remember correctly," Smith noted, adding, "I got to double check that. How the hell you depart from office worth over $200 million?"

Investigations into the financial dealings of these former leaders provide context to Smith's observations. According to a detailed examination by Forbes, Bill and Hillary Clinton have collectively accumulated approximately $240 million since Bill Clinton concluded his presidency in 2001. A substantial portion of these earnings is attributed to Bill Clinton, who reportedly generated $189 million through book authorship and an additional $106 million from paid speaking engagements.
Similarly, a separate Forbes investigation revealed that Barack Obama's net worth grew by about $20 million during his 12 years in public service, encompassing his time as a senator and two terms as president. By 2024, his total net worth was estimated to be around $70 million.
