Sophie Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever and teammate of Caitlin Clark, has added to the ongoing discourse surrounding the WNBA with her recent public remarks. Known for her outspoken nature, Cunningham shared her candid thoughts about her former team, the Phoenix Mercury, during a recent episode of her podcast, "Show Me Something."
Cunningham's tenure with the Phoenix Mercury concluded before she joined the Indiana Fever last year. Her comments come in the wake of a highly publicized incident where Mercury player Alyssa Thomas committed a hard foul on Caitlin Clark. Initially uncalled during the game, the play was later reviewed by the WNBA, resulting in the foul being upgraded to a Flagrant 2 and Thomas receiving a suspension. Adding to the controversy, the Mercury's social media account posted a message that appeared to mock the incident, which was subsequently deleted.
Standing in support of Clark, Cunningham asserted that the Mercury team is not well-regarded. "I know people in their own organization — no one likes their team this year. They say that they're the unfriendliest group," Cunningham stated on her podcast. She added, "So we're not the only ones who feel that way. Internal people feel that way too."
Professionalism Questioned
These remarks quickly drew a sharp rebuke from WNBA reporter Meaghan L. Hall, who took to social media to express her disapproval, suggesting Cunningham should have kept her opinions private.
"Goodness gracious. I — 1) This is wildly unprofessional," Hall wrote in a post on X. "2) How is this helping with the points at everything current discourse? 3) There is not any scenario that exists where a player should be saying this about any organization."
Cunningham's History with the Mercury
Cunningham spent six seasons playing for the Phoenix Mercury before her move to the Indiana Fever. Last year, she was also named in a lawsuit that alleged a sexual relationship between her and Phoenix Suns and Mercury CEO Josh Bartelstein, an accusation which she publicly denied.
The Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury are scheduled to compete again on July 9. However, the availability of Caitlin Clark for that matchup remains uncertain due to an ongoing back issue.
