Second U.S. Citizen Contracts Ebola in Congo Amid Record-Breaking Outbreak
A humanitarian worker has become the second American to test positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the virus continues its rapid spread.
U.S.·

A United States citizen operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) recently received a positive diagnosis for the Ebola virus, as confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This development occurs amidst the continued expansion of the virulent disease across Central Africa.
The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, is engaged with a humanitarian aid group and represents the second American national to contract Ebola during the ongoing epidemic.
New Case Details and Public Health Response
In an official statement released on Friday, the CDC acknowledged the new case, stating, "CDC is aware of a U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) who has tested positive for Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola."
The federal health agency further elaborated on its proactive measures, indicating, "CDC is working with the patient's employing organization, other U.S. federal agencies, public health authorities, and partners in DRC to help prevent further transmission by supporting contact tracing and performing risk assessments to identify high-risk contacts."
Previous American Case and Recovery
The first U.S. citizen to contract the virus in this outbreak, Dr. Peter Stafford, made a full recovery. He was medically evacuated from Congo to Germany in May, shortly after the outbreak began.
Following a negative test result for the virus, Dr. Stafford returned to the United States last month.
"I am filled with gratitude to God for preserving my life, to all those who prayed on my behalf, and to the many medical providers who cared for me," he said in a statement. "I am feeling well and thankful to be reunited with Rebekah and the kids. Our prayers continue for those in Congo who are facing this devastating epidemic and for the ongoing efforts to control the disease."
Africa's Fastest-Growing Ebola Outbreak
The current Ebola epidemic marks the most rapidly expanding outbreak ever documented on the African continent. Data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates 1,830 confirmed cases in Congo, resulting in 648 fatalities. Neighboring Uganda has also reported instances of the disease.
Notably, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
International Context and Containment Efforts
Last month, a medical professional from France also tested positive for the virus after returning to Paris. To date, no cases of Ebola have been identified within the United States.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed the risk of a widespread global outbreak as low. The virus is known to transmit through direct contact with bodily fluids, not via airborne particles.
Authorities in Congo officially declared the Ebola outbreak on May 15.
In response to the outbreak declaration, the United States augmented its security measures. These precautions include intensified health screenings for American citizens returning from the affected region and limitations on entry for non-U.S. citizens traveling from that area.
