Representative Tom Kean Jr., a New Jersey Republican, delivered an emotional address on Tuesday, publicly disclosing for the first time the medical condition that led to his absence from congressional duties and campaign events for nearly four months.
Kean revealed he received a diagnosis of depression following hospitalization for medical testing. He described a recovery process that spanned months, during which he remained under medical supervision in the hospital for an extended period.
"I'm grateful that I accepted help, because today I stand before you stronger, healthier and excited to return to the work that I love," Kean stated on the House floor.
The speech coincided with the 57-year-old lawmaker's return to Washington this week, marking his first appearance since early March. A spokesperson for the New Jersey Republican had previously announced his planned return for the June 30 session earlier in the month.
During his recovery, Kean missed 140 roll call votes, resulting in a complete absence rate for that period, according to data from GovTrack.
Representative Reveals Health Battle
Throughout his time away, Kean's office had repeatedly indicated an imminent return to his duties, though the timeline was adjusted multiple times. In his address, Kean explained that these shifts were due to his initial misunderstanding of the duration required for full recovery.
"When I said I hoped to return in a matter of weeks, I believed it," Kean explained. "Those were the best estimates that the doctors could provide. But as the over 48 million of my fellow Americans being treated for this illness have come to discover, there is no timeline for healing."
The two-term representative maintained privacy regarding the specifics of his condition during his recuperation, but he had pledged transparency upon his return. This discretion extended to House Republican leadership, who, when questioned by reporters on several occasions, indicated they were not privy to the details of Kean’s health challenges.
Return to Capitol Hill and Political Context
Kean's return bolsters the Republicans' slim majority in the House, coming as Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, endeavors to secure passage of a critical defense spending bill this week.
Speaker Johnson remarked on Tuesday that he anticipated a strong outpouring of empathy for Kean following his revelation, adding that he had encouraged the New Jersey congressman to be open about his situation during his absence.
"It's not an uncommon kind of condition and ailment that he's been fighting, and I think people resonate with that," the Speaker commented.
Kean had previously informed The New Jersey Globe that his medical issue did not impair his cognitive abilities and that he was not contending with any chronic conditions that might influence his decision to seek a third term in the House. Even while away from the Capitol, Kean's office continued to engage on social media, draft legislative proposals, and submit his remarks for inclusion in the congressional record.
Looming Re-election Challenge
The congressman's return to work precedes a significant re-election challenge from Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and Democrat who is receiving substantial establishment backing.
Bennett is anticipated to emphasize her background in national security, a strategy reminiscent of that employed by Governor Mikie Sherrill, a New Jersey Democrat, during her successful gubernatorial campaign.
This suburban swing district is recognized as one of the most competitive House districts nationwide, and Democrats are expected to mount an aggressive campaign to unseat Kean.
The incumbent Republican has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump and faced no challengers in the May primary election. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report currently rates Kean’s re-election prospects as a "toss-up."
