The Las Vegas Raiders are facing a moment of apprehension after prominent running back Ashton Jeanty sustained what appeared to be a leg injury during a practice session on Sunday. The incident led to the 22-year-old being assisted off the field, visibly unable to place any weight on his right leg.
Jeanty reportedly incurred the injury while diving to secure a pass during a team drill. He remained on the ground following the play, creating a palpable silence within the indoor practice facility. Teammates responded by kneeling in a collective moment of prayer for their colleague.
As of now, the Raiders organization has not released an official statement regarding Jeanty's condition. Head coach Klint Kubiak is expected to address reporters on Tuesday, which may provide further updates on the situation.
Strong Rookie Campaign
Jeanty's injury comes on the heels of an impressive rookie season. Drafted as the No. 6 overall pick out of Boise State last year, he quickly established himself as a key offensive asset.
Despite playing behind an offensive line that struggled at times, Jeanty was highly productive. Across 17 games, he amassed 975 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground, complemented by 55 receptions for 346 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
Preseason Play and Potential Depth
The young running back had seen limited action during the team's two preseason contests this year. He recorded just three carries for 16 yards in the first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals and was held out of the subsequent game against the Houston Texans.
Should Jeanty require time away from the field, the team possesses several options to step into the role. Fourth-round rookie Mike Washington Jr. is a prominent candidate, having already demonstrated a strong showing in training camp and taking first-team repetitions even before Jeanty's injury. Following the incident, Washington assumed the primary running back duties in practice. Other players who could see increased roles include Dylan Laube, undrafted rookie Roman Hemby, and veteran Dare Ogunbowale.
