The wreckage of a Pan Am flight that tragically ditched into the Atlantic Ocean off Puerto Rico in 1952 has been located, more than seven decades after the incident. The crash claimed the lives of 52 individuals and played a pivotal role in establishing mandatory passenger safety briefings for commercial air travel.
Investigators recently identified the remains of the DC-4 aircraft, known as the Clipper Endeavor, utilizing an autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with high-resolution sonar. The fuselage and a separated tail section were discovered resting in approximately 2,000 feet of water.
The aircraft experienced a severe ocean landing following a loss of engine power shortly after its departure from San Juan, Puerto Rico, as it was en route to New York City.
Accounts from the 17 passengers and crew members who survived the initial impact revealed that while everyone endured the landing, many passengers struggled to find life vests. Furthermore, the crew faced significant difficulties deploying the life rafts before the plane rapidly submerged within minutes.
A Catalyst for Aviation Safety Reforms
The panic among the occupants as they attempted to secure flotation devices became a critical factor in driving subsequent aviation safety reforms. These included the implementation of mandatory pre-flight passenger briefings and substantial improvements to flotation equipment design and accessibility.
The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), the predecessor to the Federal Aviation Administration, attributed the accident primarily to insufficient maintenance, which contributed to the engine failure. The board also cited the captain’s handling of the aircraft after power was lost as a contributing factor.
The Extensive Search Effort
The quest to locate the long-lost wreckage began in 2019 when Russ Matthews, President of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, learned of a luggage tag from the flight washing ashore in Florida. This discovery prompted him to delve deeper into the incident.
Matthews’ investigation spanned years, involving meticulous examination of archives from Pan Am and the Coast Guard in pursuit of clues regarding the plane’s resting place. Reports from the Civil Aeronautics Board also proved instrumental in guiding the search.
A crucial breakthrough in pinpointing the wreckage’s location came from records found in Puerto Rico. These documents included details from a hearing conducted on the crash and a map drafted by Air Force pilots who had witnessed the accident while on a training flight in the vicinity.
An earlier attempt to find the wreckage two years prior, using a towed sonar array, was thwarted by adverse weather conditions. Matthews stated that he and his team of volunteers were determined to make a second attempt before the upcoming 75th anniversary of the crash, opting for a new, advanced drone originally designed for military applications such as detecting undersea mines.
Collaboration Leads to Breakthrough Discovery
Tony Romeo, CEO of the undersea exploration firm Deep Sea Vision, had been in discussions with Matthews for some time regarding the possibility of assisting in the search if one of his company's vessels ever operated in the region. The opportunity arose in April when one of Deep Sea Vision’s ships, equipped with an advanced underwater drone possessing the necessary sensors, was transiting past Puerto Rico between other assignments.
“There we were, and everything kind of came together at the moment: good weather, the right team, and the right equipment and ship. So we took a shot at it,” said Romeo, whose own father had worked as a mechanic and pilot for Pan Am.
Deep Sea Vision has previously undertaken significant underwater expeditions, including an extensive but unsuccessful six-month mission to locate Amelia Earhart’s plane.
All the research compiled by Matthews’ group, combined with historical weather data from the time of the crash, was synthesized to create a comprehensive map indicating the most probable location. This defined a search area spanning 10 square nautical miles. Remarkably, the advanced drone successfully identified the wreckage on its initial pass over the designated area, though searchers only confirmed the discovery after the drone returned to the surface with its captured images.
