Oregon Sheriff's Bait Bike Operation Leads to Dozens of Arrests in Under Three Months
A targeted initiative utilizing GPS-equipped bicycles has resulted in the apprehension of over 30 individuals suspected of theft in a community near Portland.
U.S.·

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon has reported the arrest of at least 34 individuals following a successful bait bike operation designed to apprehend suspected thieves. This initiative targeted property theft, deploying specially equipped bicycles in strategic locations.
The program commenced in mid-April 2026, focusing on Aloha, a community situated west of Portland. Authorities placed these customized bikes in various spots, particularly in high-traffic areas known for frequent thefts. This strategy aimed to deter and catch individuals involved in stealing bicycles.
Operation Details and Effectiveness
In less than three months, the tactic proved highly effective. The bait bikes were repeatedly stolen and subsequently recovered swiftly by deputies, directly leading to numerous arrests. A statement from the sheriff’s office highlighted the operation's success, noting,
The bait bike has been repeatedly stolen and, shortly after, recovered by deputies, leading to arrests.
The program utilized standard mountain bikes secretly outfitted with GPS tracking devices and alarms. These bikes were strategically positioned in areas where the likelihood of theft was higher. Deputies working overnight shifts, often referred to as graveyard deputies, were responsible for monitoring these bikes. This continuous oversight allowed for rapid response once a bait bike was taken.
The sheriff’s office explained the alert system:
When the bike is taken, the alarm notifies the deputies monitoring the beacon, and they move in to recover the stolen bike.
The operation has led to nearly three dozen arrests. Investigations revealed that several of the apprehended suspects were either wanted on outstanding arrest warrants or were found to be in possession of controlled substances at the time of their arrest.
Technological Approach and Public Safety Recommendations
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office advises bicycle owners to secure their bikes in safe locations and to maintain records of their serial numbers. This information is crucial for deputies when investigating theft incidents.
Reaffirming their dedication to public safety, the WCSO stated,
Sheriff’s Office deputies continue to look for ways to keep Washington County safe and embrace technology as a tool to improve public safety.
Residents who observe suspicious activities are encouraged to contact non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111. In situations requiring immediate attention, individuals should call 911.
