The pinnacle of this conference dominance was reached when the Indiana Hoosiers capped off an undefeated 16-0 season by clinching the National Championship. Their path to glory included a triumph over Ohio State in the conference championship, a commanding win against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, and a decisive victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal. While the Southeastern Conference (SEC) may boast broader depth across its teams, the elite programs within the Big Ten are undoubtedly on par with, if not superior to, any other in the nation.
Oregon's Ascent: A New Contender Emerges
Amidst this established hierarchy, a new program appears poised to assert its claim at the top of the Big Ten: the Oregon Ducks.
A significant indicator of a collegiate team's potential from one season to the next is the percentage of its roster's production that returns. Greater retention of core players typically fosters improved continuity and development. Interestingly, the Big Ten features several teams with high rates of returning production on both offense and defense. According to data compiled by Bill Connelly, institutions such as Maryland, Nebraska, Minnesota, and UCLA were among the top 10 nationally in returning player value. However, their 2025 season performances suggest this metric might not be as critical for them. More notably, the Oregon Ducks ranked 12th in this assessment.
Oregon's substantial returning production—66% of their overall output, including star quarterback Dante Moore—comes from a team that suffered only two losses last season, both at the hands of the formidable Indiana Hoosiers. The Ducks showcased their prowess throughout 2025, defeating a strong USC squad 42-27, prevailing over the Iowa Hawkeyes in challenging road conditions, overcoming their rival Washington Huskies, and achieving an impressive 23-0 shutout against an elite Texas Tech team in the College Football Playoff.
Close behind Oregon in returning production is USC, bringing back 65% of their output as they enter what is considered a pivotal season under coach Lincoln Riley. However, Oregon holds a distinct advantage: their high percentage of returning talent stems from a team that performed significantly better than USC last year. Consequently, Bill Connelly's SP+ projections position Oregon as the No. 2 team nationally, reflecting their anticipated efficiency across offense, defense, and special teams.
Evaluating Key Big Ten Challengers
Turning attention to other prominent Big Ten programs, USC presents itself as a significant wildcard. The Trojans are projected at No. 13 in the SP+ rankings, largely due to an anticipated elite offense and a defense expected to be reliable, though not necessarily standout. A notable concern, however, is their special teams, which rank a low 100th nationally following numerous critical errors in 2025. Nevertheless, special teams often represent the most straightforward aspect of a team to improve. Meanwhile, recent champions Ohio State and Indiana face a somewhat more challenging path, though their current rosters are far from weak. Ohio State retains 60% of its production, placing them at No. 31 nationally in this metric. Indiana, despite experiencing several significant player departures, still brings back 56% of its production, ranking 52nd. While these figures are lower than Oregon's, they are not expected to remove either team from the top 5 in national projections.
