An 11-year-old boy in Ontario, Canada, succumbed to a rabies infection, according to a recent medical journal publication.
The medical journal, which did not disclose the boy's identity or his family's, detailed that he was hospitalized several weeks following an incident involving a bat.
The journal article stated that the boy's family reported he had been awakened by a bat on his nose and mouth during a cottage visit in northern Ontario, 19 days before the onset of his symptoms. His father had captured the bat in a cooking pot and subsequently released it outdoors.
The publication noted that the child showed no visible injuries on his face, and his parents did not perceive the bat's behavior as unusual. Consequently, they did not seek a medical evaluation at that time.
The boy was eventually admitted to the hospital 20 days after the encounter with the bat. His parents initially brought him to an emergency room, where he was sent home, but they returned the following morning, leading to his admission.
Medical staff observed a "rapid worsening" of the boy's condition by the evening of his admission. He remained in the hospital for more than two weeks before his passing.
The journal article specified that by the fifth day of his hospitalization, the boy exhibited no brainstem reflexes. Life-sustaining treatments were withdrawn on the 17th day of his admission, and he "died peacefully with his family at his bedside."
Understanding Rabies and Prevention
The physicians who authored the article issued a caution, emphasizing that any direct human contact with a bat, even without a visible bite or scratch, warrants immediate discussion with public health authorities.
Rabies is almost universally fatal in humans unless swiftly treated with postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). This critical treatment is nearly always effective if administered promptly after exposure to the virus.
