Footage captured Mayor Mamdani entering the Thomas Jefferson Pool fully clothed and swimming alongside children. The event aimed to highlight expanded free swim initiatives and the enduring legacy of these historic Olympic-sized facilities.
However, the festive atmosphere quickly dissolved into a political dispute as Mamdani directly challenged New York GOP gubernatorial candidate and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Mamdani demanded an apology from Blakeman regarding recent remarks he made about Democratic Socialists of America-backed congressional candidate Brad Lander.
Controversy Over Remarks
The controversy stemmed from comments Blakeman made in a recent interview following Lander's victory in the NY-10 congressional primary over Dan Goldman. In that interview, Blakeman stated that Lander "would be a camp guard in a concentration camp if he could."
Mayor Mamdani came to Lander's defense, characterizing him as a "proud Jewish New Yorker" and denouncing Blakeman's comments as "unacceptable and unconscionable." Mamdani further expressed that the comparison, likening Lander to a "Nazi prison guard," was "disgusting." He contended that such rhetoric was indicative of a Republican Party striving to "dehumanize anyone they disagree with."
Blakeman's Rebuttal
In response to the mayor's demands, Blakeman issued a statement Saturday afternoon, dismissing Mamdani's credibility.
