New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani recently faced a wave of online scrutiny after offering residents guidance on air conditioning settings during a significant heatwave. The advice came as the metropolis experienced unusually high temperatures, prompting city officials to implement expanded emergency heat protocols.
Throughout a historic holiday weekend, temperatures in New York City were projected to feel as high as 112 degrees, putting immense strain on the local power infrastructure.
Amid the sweltering conditions, Mamdani shared a message on X, formerly Twitter, outlining steps for residents to help manage energy demand. "New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool," he wrote.
His recommendations included: "Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can." Mamdani emphasized that the city itself was contributing by "maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment." He concluded by stating, "A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let's ease demand — and get through the heat — together."
The post quickly gained widespread attention, accumulating over 36.5 million views, as numerous commentators and public figures criticized the council member for his specific temperature suggestion.
Public Figures Denounce Recommendations
Many critics on social media labeled Mamdani's guidance as an example of overreach or "socialism," particularly during a period of extreme heat.
Reality television personality and former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt responded, "Show us your thermostat, commie."
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, questioned the suggestion, posting, "78 degrees??? Welcome to communism people! Hope you enjoy!"
Republican Representative Brandon Gill commented on the situation, stating, "Welcome to socialism, where the government demands you turn your house into a sauna because they can't plan for the super unpredictable fact that it tends to get hot in the summer."
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh expressed his strong disagreement, asserting, "78 degrees? My AC does not go above 68 in the summer. This is America for God’s sake."
Arkansas Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders weighed in, remarking, "Turns out socialism actually isn’t free."

This was underscored by the recent primary elections, where a slate of candidates he endorsed, who are also linked to socialist political movements, all secured victories.
