Nearly 100 monkeys ran loose through residential areas in central Thailand after escaping from a government-operated enclosure overnight, prompting authorities to launch an extensive operation to capture the animals.
Officials confirmed that approximately 100 monkeys breached a section of their containment area at the Lopburi Municipality Animal Nursery. These monkeys had been under the care of local authorities, having been transferred from Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Facility staff successfully prevented over 1,000 other monkeys housed at the site from also escaping.
Recapture Efforts Underway
Provincial officials, wildlife authorities, and municipal workers initiated a search across nearby residential zones on Tuesday following the incident. Various methods were employed to bring the escaped animals back into custody.
Authorities utilized cages baited with food to entice some of the monkeys. However, for larger and more dominant macaques, tranquilizer darts were necessary to subdue them before capture. While recapture efforts continued, crews worked to repair the damaged sections of the enclosure.
Addressing Future Prevention and Welfare
Lopburi Governor Weeraphong Ritrod confirmed that the compromised enclosure had been repaired and reinforced to prevent further escapes. The governor also outlined plans for constructing a more secure, double-layer enclosure specifically designed to contain dominant monkeys in the future.
Additionally, Governor Ritrod announced that the province is preparing to establish a foundation aimed at supporting the monkeys' food costs and enhancing their overall welfare.
Mayor Chamroen Salacheep suggested several potential factors contributing to the escape, including hunger, extreme heat, overcrowding within the facility, or the macaques' innate instinct to roam freely. The mayor issued an apology to residents affected by the incident and urged anyone whose property sustained damage to report it. This would allow authorities to assess the damage and determine what assistance might be available.
Lopburi's Long-Standing Monkey Challenge
Lopburi has long been recognized for its significant population of free-roaming macaques. While a tourist attraction for some, these monkeys have also presented challenges for local residents and businesses, causing property damage and exhibiting aggressive behavior.
In recent years, authorities have implemented various strategies to manage the monkey population, including sterilization programs and relocating some animals to dedicated enclosures, similar to the one from which the recent escape occurred.
