After a two-week disappearance that garnered widespread attention, Gracie, a 3-year-old giraffe weighing 1,200 pounds, was successfully located by helicopter on Friday. The 10-foot-tall animal had wandered away from her unfenced enclosure at Cedar Hollow Ranch in Leakey, Texas, on June 12. Her eventual discovery occurred Friday morning, approximately four miles south of the ranch, nestled within a secluded, heavily-wooded landscape.
Two Weeks on the Run
Ranch manager Vick Jones explained that Gracie, who arrived at the property in May, was still adjusting to her new environment when she departed. Jones indicated that her departure was likely accidental; she had been foraging in an unfamiliar section of the ranch where giraffes typically do not venture, leading her to inadvertently exit the property and return on the wrong side of a gate. Gracie is one of two giraffes residing at the ranch. "It was just one of those unfortunate situations," Jones remarked. "We’ve never had giraffes go into that specific area before, and she did."
A Viral Search Captivates the World
Jones initially posted a missing animal alert for Gracie on a local lost and found application, hoping for local sightings. "I thought perhaps some of the residents or ranch workers nearby might spot her or hear something and give me an indication of her direction," Jones elaborated. "Within 24 hours, it had spread globally." The alert rapidly gained viral traction, inspiring numerous AI-generated images depicting Gracie in various whimsical scenarios, such as a poolside lifeguard, a ladder-free firefighter, or floating serenely down a lazy river. Jones lightheartedly commented, "I certainly understand the term viral now."
Discovery and Safe Return Plans
Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson confirmed that upon Gracie's discovery on Friday, Jones contacted a veterinarian, and a specialized team is being prepared to facilitate her return to the ranch. Jones reported that Gracie appeared to be in good health. "She’s in good shape," he confirmed, adding, "She’s standing there, swishing her tail." He further emphasized that Gracie is a gentle animal, posing no threat to people. "If you move toward her, she's taking off," he stated. During her time away, Gracie was found on unoccupied private land, with access to a pond, a creek, and ample vegetation.
The plan for Gracie’s journey back to the ranch involves a carefully coordinated effort. She will first be sedated and have a hood placed over her eyes. Her transportation will begin in an open-air trailer, transitioning to an enclosed trailer specifically designed for giraffes for the remainder of the trip.

Sheriff Johnson noted that while his office has previously responded to calls regarding missing monkeys and zebras, a lost giraffe was an unprecedented situation for the area.
Looking ahead, Jones stated his intention to install fencing around Gracie’s enclosure, a project that will necessitate significant effort, including jackhammering through rock.
