A shooting incident in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday tragically claimed three lives and left four individuals injured. Among the deceased was the suspected gunman, while three police officers were among those who sustained injuries, according to official statements.
During a press briefing, Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) Sgt. Garrett Parten stated that the circumstances surrounding the suspected gunman's death remained unclear at the time. City officials confirmed that MPD officers were on the scene of the shooting, which involved "multiple victims," including the three law enforcement personnel.
Reports from a local hospital indicated that three patients with gunshot wounds were undergoing surgery. The area saw a substantial deployment of law enforcement and emergency services following the incident.
Law Enforcement and State Response
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz promptly addressed the situation on social media, announcing that his public safety team was actively responding to the shooting. He confirmed that state officials were providing support to local law enforcement and pledged to share additional information as it became available.
In a subsequent message, Governor Walz expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts "to ensure the safety of our neighbors" in the affected area. He concluded by stating, "Minnesota is praying for our first responders," and separately, "Pray for Minnesota."
Federal assistance also arrived, with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in St. Paul responding to the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel acknowledged the incident and assured that the agency would offer all necessary resources to aid local authorities.
Statements from Public Officials and Organizations
The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police issued a statement via social media, acknowledging the injured officers. Their post read, "Two Minneapolis officers were shot today answering the call downtown. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved — the wounded, their families, and the officers still holding the line tonight."
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison described the shooting as "horrifying." He conveyed his "deepest thoughts" to those killed and injured, including the police officers, and expressed prayers for their swift recovery. Ellison affirmed his full support for responding law enforcement and pledged that his office would assist in all possible ways.
Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic candidate for Minnesota governor, confirmed she had spoken with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey regarding the "horrific shootings." She extended her prayers "to the victims and their loved ones" and offered thanks to "our courageous law enforcement."
Her Republican opponent, state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, also acknowledged the events, stating she was "praying for the victims of this heinous crime" and was "incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers."
Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., shared a message of support on social media, stating, "I am praying for all the families impacted by this horrific act of violence."
Area Secured
The City of Minneapolis later released an update, confirming that the "area is now secure" and that "there is no further threat to the public at this time."
