Michigan Parents Face Murder Charges After 7-Year-Old Son Dies Weighing 255 Pounds Amid Neglect Allegations

A couple from the vicinity of Flint, Michigan, has been indicted on murder charges following the death of their 7-year-old son, who weighed 255 pounds at the time of his passing, in what authorities describe as a profound case of neglect. Damien and Jessica O'Brien face accusations of second-degree murder, torture, and child abuse, officials confirmed.

Emergency services were dispatched to the O'Brien residence in November after their son, Casper, ceased breathing. Investigators found the young boy to be bedridden, nonverbal, and living in squalid conditions. He later succumbed at the hospital, with his death attributed to a heart muscle disease exacerbated by severe obesity.

Severe Living Conditions Uncovered

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton detailed the extreme squalor, noting that law enforcement officers found it impossible to fully enter the home to assist paramedics due to the overwhelming clutter and lack of clear space.

Despite both parents being employed and possessing health insurance, neither Casper, who Leyton described as nonverbal and likely on the autism spectrum, nor his younger sister received any medical attention. Prosecutor Leyton expressed his bewilderment, stating,

They knew enough to call the veterinarian the very morning the child went into cardiac arrest because the dog was sick. But yet they don't take the kids to the doctor. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Casper's 5-year-old sister, whom Leyton characterized as "feral," was removed from the residence by Children's Protective Services on the day of her brother's death and has since been placed in temporary foster care.
