Meghan Markle's Potential Acting Return Could Spark New Tensions with Prince William and Kate Middleton

Meghan Markle is reportedly exploring a return to the acting profession, a field she pursued before her marriage into the British royal family.

Royal correspondent Bronte Coy mentioned on BBC Radio Four’s "Today" that this acting opportunity is considered "significant" and that the Duchess of Sussex is "very excited about it."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Markle is in discussions to join Guy Ritchie's series "The Gentlemen." The prospective role would be for the show's unannounced third season, a British action-comedy.

Reinvention Through Performance

After several years spent establishing a new identity apart from the royal institution, observers suggest that a return to acting could provide the Duchess of Sussex with something her various post-royal endeavors have largely failed to deliver: a genuine opportunity for self-redefinition.

“She needs to go back to what she loves and what made her famous in the first place.”

This potential acting comeback follows a series of post-royal undertakings for Markle, not all of which have generated the momentum she might have anticipated. Since stepping back from her official royal duties in 2020, the duchess has engaged in a variety of projects spanning streaming content, podcasting, lifestyle initiatives, and philanthropic work.

Commenting on these ventures, writer Neil Wakeford observed that certain projects struggled to gain traction. “‘With Love, Meghan’ became a punchline when it really needed to be a launch pad,” Wakeford noted. “And when the show was mocked, it poisoned As Ever because the credibility was gone.”

Wakeford further suggested that the initial large deals with platforms like Netflix and Spotify might have been perceived as leverage by Meghan and Harry, when, in fact, “the deal and the check were the leverage” themselves, indicating the power lay with the platforms.

For Meghan, a return to acting could signify a strategic pivot back to a foundational approach after years of experimenting with diverse ventures both within and outside the entertainment industry.

“I personally feel they will create a new life for themselves and try to heal the wounds over the next two to three years and become an asset rather than a drama for the royal family.”

Potential Royal Ramifications

However, while this career shift might assist Markle in moving beyond the constant royal narrative, it could simultaneously generate new challenges. Royal commentator Phil Turner cautioned that renewed media focus on Meghan’s acting career and the couple's charitable initiatives could "put William and Kate into a media shade which will not go down well with them and, in reality, increase the difficulties with the warring brothers."

Since their departure from official royal life, Prince Harry and Meghan have publicly voiced their grievances through high-profile interviews and documentaries. Prince Harry's 2023 memoir, "Spare," further exacerbated the existing rift within the royal family.

This acting prospect emerges as the Sussexes are reportedly preparing for a significant transition in their family life. Prince Harry and Markle are said to be preparing to relocate back to the U.K., with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, expected to begin their schooling in Britain in September.
