Former Sheriff Mark Lamb, a candidate who received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in the Republican primary on Tuesday evening. Lamb is seeking to represent Arizona's fifth congressional district, a seat currently held by outgoing Representative Andy Biggs. This primary win positions Lamb favorably for the general election in November, given the district's consistent history of supporting Republican candidates.
Lamb's Campaign Focus and Ideology
Lamb has articulated his campaign as a commitment to safeguarding the nation's cultural foundations, often emphasizing principles he describes as "God, family, and freedom." In a campaign message, he stated his motivation for running: "That’s why I’m running for Congress. We gotta make sure our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren have the same freedoms that we have."
He has also echoed many of the priorities previously championed by Representative Biggs, particularly concerning border enforcement and federal spending. Lamb expressed strong criticism regarding the current administration's approach to the southern border. He remarked in a campaign video: "The Joe Biden administration came in, and immediately, overnight, we started seeing hundreds of thousands of people — the majority of these men were military-age men from all over the world. Many of them didn’t love America." Lamb further asserted, "We stood by as our government not only allowed them to come in but rolled out the red carpet for people that broke our law."
The District and Biggs' Departure
The congressional seat became open following Representative Biggs' announcement last year that he would pursue the governorship. Biggs, who has been a prominent supporter of Donald Trump during his tenure, is known for advocating robust conservative positions, especially on matters of federal expenditure and border security.
Upon his decision to run for governor, Biggs issued a statement: "Arizona has a bright future, but we will need strong leadership to reach its full potential. I have been honored to serve Arizona at the state and federal levels and will bring my experience home to my native state to help fulfill its tremendous capacity."
Arizona's fifth congressional district is recognized as one of the state's most reliably Republican strongholds, a characteristic further solidified by the statewide redistricting process in 2022. In his last reelection bid in 2024, Representative Biggs secured a significant victory, garnering 60.4% of the vote against Democratic challenger Katrina Schaffner, who received 39.6%.
Campaign Controversy
Lamb's campaign faced scrutiny earlier this year due to an Arizona investigation. The inquiry reportedly uncovered a pattern of behavior where Lamb allegedly sent sexually explicit images to women outside of his marriage.
In response to these allegations, Janel Lamb, Mark Lamb's wife, characterized them as a politically motivated attack. She conveyed her perspective in a social media post: "Politics can be dark and ugly, but if you know us, you know that’s not how we roll. The only way to dispel darkness is not with more darkness, only light. After all we’ve been through, a massive smear campaign is certainly not going to stop us from doing what we know is right."
With his primary victory secured, Mark Lamb will now advance to the general election, scheduled for November 3.
