Leslie addressed the incident during an appearance on a sports program, where the topic of officiating consistency arose following comments from Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts.
Evaluating the On-Court Call
Leslie acknowledged that officiating is a challenging role, often without public appreciation. However, she believes that officials should have identified the contact between Thomas and Clark during the game itself. Leslie stated, "In this particular situation, I thought that the last official should have been able to catch that. I was actually watching this game, and I was like, 'Oh, wow — that was a bit much.'" She highlighted that if the incident was clear to her as a spectator, it should have been visible to game officials.
While not surprised by the subsequent suspension handed to Thomas, Leslie expressed frustration that the foul was missed in real-time and that no replay review occurred during the game. This highlighted a perceived lapse in immediate enforcement.
A Call for League-Wide Improvement
Leslie extended her critique beyond just the specific incident, advocating for systemic improvements across the league. "I think, overall, the league has got to do better, the officials have got to do better, but also players — players have to clean it up," she urged. She reflected on a past era of play where mutual protection among athletes was more prevalent. "We used to play in a way that we protected one another. Yeah, I want to play physical, I want to play hard, but I'm not here to hurt you," she explained, emphasizing the distinction between competitive physicality and harmful intent.
The WNBA legend also suggested that Thomas's consequences might have been less severe if she had responded differently after the event, specifically by apologizing to Clark. Leslie concluded that despite the initial officiating miss, the league ultimately made the correct decision regarding the suspension. "That's not what happened, so I think the league got it right," Leslie affirmed. She reiterated her agreement with Coach Tibbetts on the vital role of consistency in enforcement, stating, "Consistency is important. It needs to get cleaned up for all players, regardless of what their accolades are."
