Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has pledged a comprehensive prosecution against individuals responsible for significant vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The damage, discovered on Saturday, included a 350-foot long cut into the pool's liner and various anti-Trump messages defacing the surrounding area.
"When people are attacking it [the Reflecting Pool], it is like an attack on our country," Secretary Burgum stated. "These are our most sacred monuments, and they [the perpetrators] are gonna be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
During a public appearance, Burgum detailed the extent of the damage and the administration's swift response. He confirmed that authorities have already made seven arrests, issued multiple citations, and filed 18 police reports in connection with the incident.
Details of the Vandalism and Investigation
The extensive damage to the Reflecting Pool involved a lengthy gash, estimated to be around 350 feet, along its industrial rubber liner. Investigators suspect the cut was inflicted using a box cutter. In addition to the physical damage, vandals left behind anti-Trump markings, notably "8647," which many have interpreted as a call for violence or for the removal of the president.
Secretary Burgum underscored the historical significance of the site, noting, "The Reflecting Pool [is] part of the 1922 Lincoln Memorial." He equated the act of cutting the pool's liner to defacing a statue, emphasizing the gravity of the offense in the eyes of the law.
"When people are using box cutters to do vandalism on this thing, it's the same as if they were throwing paint on Lincoln's statue in the eyes of the law."
Official Condemnation from Leadership
President Donald Trump also addressed the vandalism on Friday, asserting that the recently restored Reflecting Pool had been deliberately targeted. He condemned the actions, highlighting the severity of the damage inflicted upon the national landmark.
"They ripped a scar 350-feet-long through the side of the Reflecting Pool," President Trump said. "These are the people we're dealing with. These are people that want to destroy our country."
Context of National Capital Beautification
Burgum pointed out that this act of vandalism occurred despite a concentrated effort by the administration to enhance and beautify the nation's capital. These extensive restoration projects were undertaken in anticipation of America's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.
He cited impressive figures from these beautification initiatives, including the restoration of over 50 parks and circles, the repair of 48 monuments, the return to service of 22 fountains, and the repair of approximately 1,700 lights across the National Mall area.
Currently, protective fencing surrounds the Reflecting Pool as the investigation into the damage continues. Secretary Burgum explained that the fence serves a dual purpose: safeguarding the pool and preparing for the upcoming July 4th festivities, which are scheduled to include fireworks displays on both sides of the monument.
