NBA icon LeBron James is poised to seek a new team as he approaches his 24th season in the league. Reports indicate that the all-time leading scorer has informed the Los Angeles Lakers of his intent to depart in free agency after an eight-season stint with the organization, according to ESPN.
James originally joined the Lakers in 2018, following a notable second tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers, during which he delivered a championship to the Ohio city.
The Lakers have officially acknowledged James's departure.
"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold," stated Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. A Storied Tenure in Los Angeles
During his time with the Los Angeles franchise, James secured his fourth NBA championship in 2020. He also etched his name further into the record books by surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA's all-time leading scorer, a tally that currently stands at 43,440 points and continues to grow.
In the recently concluded season, James, who is set to turn 42 in December, averaged 20.9 points per game. While this marked the lowest scoring average of his illustrious career, he still contributed significantly with 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Potential New Destinations Emerge
Speculation is mounting that the Golden State Warriors are keen on uniting James with Stephen Curry. Such a move would transform one of the NBA's most intense rivalries into a formidable partnership, with two of basketball's greatest stars potentially collaborating in pursuit of a fifth championship.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are also reportedly a team in contention for James's services. Adding to the intrigue, Draymond Green has reportedly opted out of his existing contract, a move that could potentially pave the way for him to accept a reduced salary with Golden State to accommodate James's arrival.
