Russia Launches Nearly 600 Missiles and Drones in Devastating Kyiv Attack, 18 Killed

The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, experienced one of the most intense aerial assaults since the conflict began, as Russia unleashed hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles during an overnight bombardment. The extensive strike resulted in at least 18 fatalities and left over 90 individuals injured, with residential structures bearing the brunt of the devastation.

An account shared by a relative of a Kyiv resident described the terror experienced during the assault.

"Early this morning, I spoke with my mother-in-law, who is in Kyiv. She told me she had never been so terrified. It felt as if the biblical Apocalypse were unfolding before her very eyes. Everyone was praying."

For hours, explosions reverberated across central Kyiv, prompting thousands of inhabitants to seek refuge in bomb shelters and underground metro stations. This assault marked the most widespread destruction witnessed in Kyiv during 2026 and stands as the deadliest strike on the capital since May, when an attack claimed 24 lives and collapsed an apartment building.

Scale of the Attack and Ukrainian Response

Ukrainian air defense forces reported that Russia deployed a total of 74 missiles and 496 drones during the night's offensive.

Yuri Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, highlighted the exceptionally high volume of ballistic missiles used in the attack. He noted a low interception rate for these projectiles, attributing it to Ukraine's ongoing scarcity of Patriot missile defense systems.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who promptly returned to Ukraine after cutting short a visit to Ireland, confirmed that over 20 locations throughout the capital sustained damage.

President Zelenskyy emphasized the strategic focus of the assault:

"The main strike was directed at Kyiv," he stated. He underscored the urgent need for defensive capabilities, adding, "Air defence supplies for Ukraine are an absolute and critical priority."

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced Friday as a day of mourning, detailing that the assault caused damage across the city, home to approximately three million residents.

Mayor Klitschko also voiced strong criticism regarding Russia's international standing. He declared,

"And yet, this barbaric Russia continues to be treated at the U.N. as a normal member state. It is time to end this parallel reality. Russia’s status as a permanent member of the Security Council should finally be called into question. Russia should be treated for what it has become: a pariah state."

Damage and International Reaction

As dawn broke, emergency teams commenced search and rescue operations amid the debris of a nine-story structure situated on the left bank of the Dnipro River, where fires continued to rage. Municipal authorities indicated that several individuals were believed to still be trapped within compromised residential buildings.

Visual documentation from East2West captured the intensity of the overnight bombardment within Kyiv. One segment depicted a baby asleep while flashes of explosions illuminated an open window and smoke from a previous impact ascended nearby. Additional footage illustrated residents taking cover near a metro station during the strikes, alongside widespread devastation across Kyiv, with residential buildings heavily damaged and dense smoke obscuring parts of the urban landscape.

Beyond residential areas, the attack impacted over 20 distinct sites, encompassing diplomatic housing and the National Institute of Biochemistry, where advanced laboratory facilities and offices were entirely destroyed.

Katarina Mathernova, the European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, stated that Russia had "unleashed hell on Kyiv" during the night, targeting diplomatic residences. While no diplomatic personnel sustained injuries, their possessions were destroyed in a fire that consumed the affected building.

Moscow's Justification and Regional Security

In a statement posted on Telegram, Russia's Defense Ministry characterized its actions as a "massive attack," asserting the use of long-range, high-precision weaponry and unmanned aerial vehicles to target military and energy infrastructure, along with airports in Kyiv and other areas. Moscow claimed these strikes were a retaliatory measure following Ukrainian drone attacks within Russian territory.

Concurrently, Ukraine reported striking an oil refinery in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region overnight. The governor of that region confirmed one fatality at an industrial site following a strike.

The Kremlin indicated that Russian military commanders provided President Vladimir Putin with a briefing on the recent assaults. It further stated that Moscow intends to intensify pressure on Ukraine in pursuit of its war objectives.

In response to the escalating situation, Poland, a NATO and European Union member sharing a border with Ukraine, briefly deployed fighter jets as a precautionary measure. Similarly, Finland's defense forces announced a temporary aviation restriction zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

A Romanian official, Țoiu, confirmed that

"Two Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft deployed under the Enhanced Air Policing mission and operating from the 86th Air Base in Fetești in Romania, were scrambled to monitor the Romanian airspace situation near the border with Ukraine."

He added that

"A Romanian Air Force IAR 330 Puma helicopter was also deployed. Such incidents have constantly accompanied Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine."

On Thursday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced her intention to propose additional sanctions targeting entities that support Russia's military-industrial complex, directly in response to these latest strikes.

In a statement posted on X, Kallas asserted,

"The more Moscow attacks civilians, the more sanctions must be imposed."

Since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia's attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities have resulted in the deaths of thousands of Ukrainian civilians.

Moscow consistently denies intentionally targeting civilian populations. However, it maintains that strikes on what it terms 'civil infrastructure' are legitimate, arguing these actions impede Ukraine's capacity to conduct warfare.
