The Seattle Seahawks, recent winners of their second Super Bowl title, are expected to transition to new ownership ahead of the 2026 season. A consortium spearheaded by Vinod Khosla, his spouse Neeru, and their son Neal, is poised to become the fourth ownership group in the franchise's 51-year history.
The Khosla family has reportedly finalized an agreement valued at $9.6 billion with the Paul Allen estate to acquire controlling interest in the Seahawks. This figure represents an unprecedented price for an NFL franchise.
Record-Setting Valuation and Previous Sales
This reported $9.6 billion valuation for the Seahawks would significantly surpass the NFL's previous record for an ownership change. The most recent benchmark was set in 2023 when a group led by Josh Harris acquired the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion.
While this sum sets a new high for an NFL team, it would not exceed the $10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers in October, which remains the most expensive transaction in North American sports history.
The Seahawks organization has confirmed the impending sale in an official statement, though specific financial terms of the deal were not publicly disclosed.
The Khosla Family and Approval Process
Vinod Khosla, who currently holds a limited partner stake in the San Francisco 49ers, will be required to divest his family’s minority interest in that team as a condition of the agreement before assuming control of the Seahawks.
"We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks," Vinod Khosla stated on behalf of his family. "We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere."
For the sale to become official, it must receive approval from at least 24 of the 32 NFL team owners. According to reports, this vote could take place as early as next month during a league meeting, following a review by the league’s finance committee.
The full composition of the investor group, beyond the Khosla family, has not yet been clarified.
Vinod and Neeru Khosla have been married since 1980. Vinod is recognized as a co-founder of Sun Microsystems and later established Khosla Ventures. Their son, Neal Khosla, is a Stanford University alumnus and serves as the co-founder and CEO of Curai Health. Neeru Khosla holds a master's degree in molecular biology from San Jose State University and is also an entrepreneur.
Legacy and Estate's Wishes
Jody Allen has presided over the Paul G. Allen Estate since her brother's passing in October 2018. In February, the estate initiated the sale of the Seahawks, aligning with Paul Allen's expressed wishes for his assets to eventually be sold, with the proceeds designated for charitable causes.
Earlier this week, it was reported that a group led by Celtics alternate governors Wyc Grousbeck and Aditya Mittal had been considered one of two final contenders in the bidding process for the Seahawks.
