Kamala Harris, currently serving as Vice President, is reportedly engaging with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other influential progressive figures. This outreach is fueling speculation about a potential presidential campaign in 2028.
Building Progressive Support
Reports also indicate that Harris has initiated contact with pro-Palestinian organizations. This engagement follows a period of criticism from these groups during her 2024 presidential campaign. She is said to have connected with at least one group involved in the "Uncommitted Movement," which emerged in response to President Joe Biden's approach to the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
Since taking office in January, Mayor Mamdani's standing within the Democratic Party has reportedly expanded significantly. This was underscored last month when all socialist-aligned candidates he endorsed achieved victory in their respective New York Democratic primary races.
Conservative Reactions and Criticism
The reported conversation between Harris and Mayor Mamdani drew swift condemnation from conservative commentators on social media platforms.
Republican political strategist Nathan Brand voiced his disapproval on X, stating, "Kamala Harris 2020 was desperate, Kamala Harris 2024 was pathetic, Kamala Harris 2028 will be unhinged."
Brand further commented on the Democratic Party's trajectory:
"They're in the death spiral, because now they have these people inside their tent. This is who the Democratic Party is today: these radical leftists that want to fundamentally transform our country. And that's why we have to fight. That's why we have to come together, unite, and we have to win. We have to win to save the country. We have to win to move our policies forward. There's a lot at stake. Certainly, Kamala Harris, the meeting with Mamdani and these radicals shows you where the left continues to go where they want to go, but listen, she has to kowtow to these radicals to try to win."
Hinting at a Future Campaign
Earlier this year, Harris visited South Carolina, a pivotal state for presidential primaries. This trip occurred shortly after she made an intriguing remark at an initial gathering of Democratic presidential hopefuls.
In April, during the National Action Network's 35th Anniversary Convention, its founder, the Rev. Al Sharpton, directly inquired if she intended to seek the presidency in 2028. Harris responded with a tantalizing "I might. I might. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted."
Harris, who previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, was greeted by attendees at the convention with enthusiastic calls of "run again," signaling support for a future campaign.
