Former First Lady Jill Biden recently engaged in a conversation with Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of "The View," to discuss her memoir, "A View from the East Wing," alongside broader topics concerning her personal life, political landscape, and interactions with the media. The discussion took place at a 92nd Street Y event in New York City in June.
Evaluating Press Coverage of the Biden Administration
During the event, Goldberg, who moderated the discussion, posed a question to Biden regarding the fairness of press coverage during her husband's four-year term as president. Biden initially expressed hesitation in her response. "You know, I think probably, well, I mean, seeing how things are now, I don't know. I don't know. I'd have to think about that," she stated.
Biden then reflected on potential shortcomings in her husband's administration's approach to media relations. She suggested that they might have taken more proactive steps to engage with journalists. "But, you know, maybe we could have done more to reach out to the press to be more open so that they understood us as real people and not sort of these figureheads," she remarked. "That's one thing I do regret, that maybe we could have formed closer relationships."
Allegations of a Double Standard
The former first lady went on to imply a distinct "double standard" in how the media treated the Biden administration compared to the current Trump administration. She articulated her perspective, stating, "You know, if Joe would have done any one of the things that are occurring now, I mean he would have been excoriated." Goldberg reportedly responded with a chuckle and an affirmative "Oh yeah."
Biden further emphasized her belief in this disparity, adding, "But, you know, it's just there — it's like there's a double standard. And that I don't think is fair or was fair."
Addressing Critics of Her Memoir
Beyond discussions of media fairness, Biden also addressed criticism from within Democratic circles regarding her memoir. Some critics have suggested that the book needlessly resurrected controversies from the 2024 election cycle.
Specifically, at a book event held in Washington, D.C., earlier in June, Biden was questioned about comments attributed to Andrew Bates, a former spokesman for the Biden White House. Bates was quoted as saying of her book, "I don’t see why that painful conversation for the party needed to be publicly reopened right now."
In a direct response, Biden challenged Bates's remarks. "I want to say to Andrew: Call me up, and say it to my face, buddy," she declared. She countered the criticism by asserting that her memoir contained "only one chapter on politics."
