A JetBlue flight encountered what its pilot reported as a drone strike while on its final approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday morning, according to federal authorities.
The incident involved JetBlue Airlines Flight 948, which had originated from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Preliminary assessments indicate the aircraft made contact with the drone at an approximate altitude of 3,000 feet.
“The pilot of JetBlue Airlines Flight 948 reported striking a drone at approximately 3,000 feet altitude while on final approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport around 7:15 a.m. local time on Monday,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated.
Following the reported contact, the flight successfully landed without any complications, and all passengers disembarked as usual. The aircraft was subsequently taken out of service to undergo a thorough post-flight inspection.
Both JetBlue and FAA officials confirmed that the comprehensive inspection of the aircraft revealed no damage or any physical evidence consistent with a collision. JetBlue emphasized its commitment to passenger safety.
“Safety is JetBlue's first priority, and we will assist with any relevant investigations,” JetBlue affirmed.
Drone Regulations and Investigations
The FAA has initiated an investigation into the reported event. The agency reiterated that operating drones without authorization near airports is strictly prohibited and illegal under federal law.
Despite these regulations, the FAA noted that reports of “unmanned aircraft (UAS) sightings from pilots, citizens and law enforcement remain high.” Individuals found to be in violation of FAA regulations face substantial civil penalties and potential criminal charges, which can include incarceration.
