Jessica Killin has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, securing her place on the November ballot to challenge the Republican incumbent, Rep. Jeff Crank. The contest will determine who represents the district, which is primarily centered around Colorado Springs.
Killin, who previously served as an Army captain and as chief of staff to Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, defeated fellow Army veteran and nonprofit leader Joe Reagan to clinch the nomination, according to reports from the Associated Press. Her victory sets the stage for a general election battle against Crank, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary and is seeking his second term. The 5th District encompasses Colorado Springs and most of El Paso County, an area known for its significant military presence.
Contrasting Backgrounds Define the Race
Killin entered the congressional race as a newcomer to electoral politics, backed by national support and a robust fundraising effort. Her primary opponent, Joe Reagan, who also contested the seat in this election cycle, emphasized his deep local connections, his military combat service, and his work assisting veterans in establishing businesses through his nonprofit organization.
Incumbent Rep. Jeff Crank brings a wealth of experience from both Capitol Hill and the private sector. Before his tenure in Congress, he spent seven years as a Capitol Hill staffer. Upon returning to Colorado, he held positions as Vice President for the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, Chief Operating Officer at Americans for Prosperity, a nonprofit, and as president of his own real estate investment firm, as detailed on his campaign website.
Beyond his professional roles, Crank also has a background in broadcasting, having hosted The Jeff Crank Show in Colorado and the American Potential Podcast.
A Shifting Political Landscape
The upcoming general election will serve as a crucial test of the Democratic Party's ability to gain ground in a traditionally Republican-leaning district. This area includes prominent military installations such as Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy, alongside rapidly expanding suburbs of Colorado Springs.
The race has garnered considerable national attention from Democrats, as the Colorado Springs-based district, historically a Republican stronghold, has shown indications of becoming more politically competitive. A local news outlet, The Colorado Sun, reported that the margin for the Republican presidential candidate in El Paso County, which largely overlaps with the 5th District, decreased significantly from 22 points in 2016 to 10 points in 2024. Similarly, Republican margins in congressional races within the district have also narrowed over the past decade.
In a clear signal of national Democratic interest, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) included Killin in its "Red to Blue" program. This initiative identifies Republican-held seats that the national party views as potential pickup opportunities, despite the district's continued Republican lean.
Killin's Centrist Stance
Leading up to the primary, Killin publicly aligned herself with a centrist faction within the Democratic Party. She endorsed an initiative that characterized its signatories as "capitalist, not socialist" and highlighted core principles such as public safety, fiscal responsibility, secure borders, and national pride.
During an online news conference, Killin further articulated her political views, stating that candidates who align with the Democratic Socialists of America "should not be the face of our party," a remark reported by the local publication Colorado Politics.
