From efforts to enhance physical appearance, known as "looksmaxxing," to strategies for improving sleep quality, dubbed "sleepmaxxing," these popular terms share a common objective: to extract maximum potential from a specific characteristic or routine.

Amidst a growing emphasis on overall wellness and extending lifespan, this trend has evolved into "humanmaxxing." This development sparks a broader inquiry: What are the ultimate limits to human body optimization?

While a precise, singular definition remains elusive, humanmaxxing broadly encompasses endeavors to optimize an individual's health, performance, and longevity. These efforts typically involve a combination of specific lifestyle habits, diligent health tracking, supplement regimens, and, in some instances, more experimental interventions.

Diverse Approaches to Human Optimization

For some proponents, the journey begins with biohacking. Dave Asprey, a Texas-based wellness expert who identifies as the "father of biohacking," asserts that optimizing the body starts with altering one's environment.

Asprey defines biohacking as "the art and science of changing the environment around you or inside you so that you have full control of your own biology." His public recommendations often focus on enhancing cellular energy through daily choices, such as intermittent fasting, adopting high-fat diets, utilizing red-light therapy, and adhering to supplement routines.

"My goal right now is 180 years, because I'm doing something about it now instead of waiting," he once stated.

Other individuals have embraced a methodology driven by data. Bryan Johnson, a technology entrepreneur and the founder of the multi-million dollar Blueprint longevity initiative in Los Angeles, contends that true body optimization necessitates removing human error from health decisions, relying instead on comprehensive medical data.

"Methodically, we sought to build an algorithm with science and data that could better care for me than I can myself," Johnson explained on his website. "My mind did not have the authority to override the algorithm."

Johnson's daily regimen involves monitoring hundreds of health metrics, consuming a meticulously measured diet, taking numerous supplements, and undergoing advanced medical treatments, all with the aim of reducing his biological age.

At the more extreme end of this spectrum are those who are investing in technologies designed to push the boundaries of human capability.

Christian Angermayer, a London-based tech investor, recently characterized humanmaxxing as a strategic pursuit of human maximization.

"I don't think we should become something different, because I think humans are awesome, but I think we can maximize the potential [that] is already in us," he shared in an interview with a prominent newspaper.

Angermayer's investment firm, Apeiron Investment Group, concentrates on technologies aimed at helping people "live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives." Public guidelines from the National Institute on Aging indicate that while some anti-aging therapies have shown promise in laboratory research, there is currently insufficient evidence to confirm their safety or effectiveness in extending human life.

Clinical professionals also caution that extensive self-experimentation can bypass the rigorous safety standards that are mandatory for conventional medical treatments.

According to the Endocrine Society, the use of substances like testosterone or growth hormone without a diagnosed medical need can lead to severe health consequences. These risks include cardiovascular complications and long-term disruptions to the body's delicate chemical balance.

While many practices associated with humanmaxxing align with established healthy lifestyle choices, experts advise consumers to be wary of expensive or experimental interventions that promise dramatic anti-aging or longevity benefits without robust scientific backing.
