Several nations within the Gulf region have unequivocally condemned the drone attacks launched by Iran against the island state of Bahrain on Saturday. These countries have also pledged to stand united against any future acts of aggression from Tehran, underscoring a heightened state of regional tension.
This recent escalation presents a significant challenge to the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that was formally agreed upon last week by President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, potentially undermining efforts towards de-escalation.
Escalating Regional Tensions
The drone strikes on Bahrain followed a series of escalating incidents in the region. On Friday, an Iranian attack targeted a cargo vessel traversing the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the United States conducted overnight airstrikes, hitting Iranian missile, drone, and radar facilities. Iran's subsequent drone assault on Bahrain, which notably hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, marked a direct retaliatory action.
Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), labeled Iran's attack on Bahrain as "treacherous." He further stated that such actions would hinder ongoing peace initiatives across the Middle East. The GCC represents the collective interests of Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, with several of these member states issuing their own individual statements of condemnation.
Gulf States Respond Forcefully
Bahrain itself confirmed that a number of Iranian drones had entered its airspace, describing the strikes as a "flagrant threat" to its national security. The specific targets of these drone attacks within Bahraini territory have not yet been fully clarified.
"While the Ministry condemns this heinous aggression, it affirms that the Iranian regime’s continued attacks, at a time when regional and international efforts are moving towards de-escalation, place the sole responsibility on Tehran for undermining peace efforts, and reveals an approach based on destabilizing security, exporting chaos, and undermining regional stability," Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry also said Saturday.
Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also released statements on Saturday denouncing Iran's actions. Kuwait's Foreign Ministry asserted that the Iranian strikes represent "a dangerous undermining of endeavors for peace and stability, and a threat to the security and stability of the region." Both Kuwait and the UAE reiterated their unwavering commitment to supporting Bahrain's safety and stability.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar joined the chorus of public condemnations, with both nations declaring that the latest strikes constitute a violation of Bahrain's sovereignty and international law.
Oman's Neutral Stance and Revolutionary Guard Claims
Notably, Oman's foreign ministry has refrained from commenting on the attack. Oman has consistently maintained a neutral posture throughout the conflict and frequently serves as a mediator in discussions between Washington and Tehran. Furthermore, Oman and Iran are currently engaged in negotiations to establish a joint framework for the future administration of navigation in the critical Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard publicly claimed responsibility for the strikes on Bahrain. Through state-run television, the Guard announced it had targeted several locations belonging to "the U.S. terrorist army in the region," without providing details on the specific sites hit, according to reports. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage resulting from the drone attack. The incident occurred just days after Secretary of State Marco Rubio held meetings with Gulf allies in Bahrain.
