Veteran jockey Frankie Dettori is currently recovering from significant injuries after being involved in a vehicular collision.
Dettori was part of a “road traffic accident” in Newmarket, England, on Wednesday night, as confirmed by his team via a statement. The incident left the celebrated jockey with “several broken ribs and a broken thumb.”
Incident Details Emerge
The collision occurred when another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Dettori was operating, causing it to spin and overturn. Following the accident, Dettori was transported to a hospital.
“His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further observation,” the statement read. “Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.”
Reports from The Sun indicated that Dettori’s vehicle ultimately came to rest upside down, though no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
A Storied Career and Future Plans
The Italian jockey boasts a remarkable career, having achieved more than 3,350 victories, predominantly in England. He famously rode seven winners in seven races at Ascot in September 1996, a feat that cemented his legendary status in the sport.
Dettori recently concluded his full-time career as a jockey, which included a stint racing in the United States and Britain, followed by rides in Brazil. He had been based in England for over three decades before his retirement.
Despite his recent retirement from full-time racing, Dettori is scheduled to compete in this year’s Leger Legends race at Doncaster in September. This event would mark his first race appearance in Britain since 2023.
