On Sunday evening, Fetterman specifically targeted what he termed the "dirtbag left" following primary successes in New York where two candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) secured wins. He stated,
"Big night for the dirtbag left."
The Senator further articulated his concerns about the party's evolving ideology, remarking,
"I’ve said the party is becoming an orgy of socialism. Clearly anti-America, anti-Western Civilization."
Fetterman's candid remarks offer a rare glimpse into how some more moderate Democrats perceive the growing influence of the far-left wing, which has significantly shaped the party's narrative in recent months. This visibility has sparked apprehension that the Democratic Party is being pulled increasingly toward more extreme positions.

In New York, Claire Valdez, a DSA member, successfully won her primary. Her campaign focused on policies such as the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a climate change strategy akin to the Green New Deal. Similarly, Darializa Avila-Chevalier, another DSA-backed candidate, defeated incumbent Representative Adriano Espillat, a prominent Democrat who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Both Avila-Chevalier and Valdez received endorsements from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who openly identifies as a socialist.
Meanwhile, in Maine, Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate vying for a U.S. Senate seat, has drawn considerable controversy. Platner has faced scrutiny for denying knowledge of the symbolism behind a tattoo linked to Nazism, making racially insensitive comments, and referring to himself as a "communist" in a Reddit post that has since been deleted.

"I mean, you look at some of the things that people have said. Abolish prison, abolish the border, abolish ICE, I mean these crazy people — I have colleagues in my caucus that refuse to even call this out."
Fetterman suggested a separate path for these factions, referencing the candidates in Maine and New York:
"Between P-hustle in Maine and some of the other winners in New York, they should form their own party and run on all the things that they’ve had to delete on social media."He concluded by asserting,
